Math is considered to be a universal language, and it is something that we find in almost all of our day to day activities. 

Math is a skills driven discipline that builds upon itself. Math is also conceptual and figurative. It works in both logical principals and with figurative ideas. 

STEAM education is directed toward making math more applicable to daily life. It works to make math more equitable, accessible, and exciting. 

Most of today's job market concerns itself in one way or another with mathematical skills. So, it is essential that our students have math literacy, and know how if they hope to be competitive in today's job market.

1. Have my students create a checkbook and bank statement for a character in the book. They could use their skill of characterization to create a log of what sort of spending their character would potentially make in the book. It is an inferential activity. They would have to use their knowledge of both math and literature to complete. 

2. Create a mathematical spreadsheet to figure out what the cost of migrating to America would be. This would be a real life activity, that would help them to empathize with the characters from the book, Refugee by Alan Gratz

3. Have my students work on creating a classroom fund and managing it for the books that we all want to buy. They could fundraise, they could manage the library, and they could learn the real world math behind saving and spending.
