Around the 1500's, the language that is now called French was spoken only in the area around Paris. The rest of the people living in what is now France spoke Breton, Dutch, Basque, or German. The building of the modern French nation is closely tied to the standardization and increased use of the local dialect of Paris beginning in the 1500's.

The defenses of the West Roman Empire began to crumble in the 400's. Germanic tribes from the east entered Gaul. They killed many Gauls and forced others into going west, they ended up in what is now Brittany. Clovis, the king of the Salian Franks, defeated the Roman governor of Gaul in 486. Clovis defeated other tribes in Gaul and expanded his kingdom. He founded the Merovingian dynasty, and he took over orthodox Christianity.
