Hi all,

My name is Flora. I am privileged to be your lecturer for this unit. I am from China originally and have been living in Australia (Sydney and Darwin) for 21 years.

I have obtained a number of qualifications including a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (GCUTL) at Charles Darwin University, a Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Clinical Education at the Australian Catholic University, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD, in Psychology) at the Australian National University.

I began my university teaching career in 2005. I have been teaching undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students. I also had an opportunity to supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students at Charles Darwin University (CDU). The PG units at ACU I am responsible for are HLSC 608 - Theoretical Foundations of Clinical Education and HLSC618 - Curriculum Development and Instructional Design. I was involved in designing and developing new units in the Bachelor of Nursing course at CDU. I have been privileged to work with many international students at two universities and have developed a good understanding of their experiences and concerns while living and studying in Australia.

I believe that teaching involves a mutual relationship between teachers and learners. I see that both teachers and learners have obligations for each other. My philosophical approach in teaching is pragmatism which allows for the development and extension of knowledge into real world experiences and encourages critical thinking. In my opinion, the responsibility as a lecturer is to provide learners with materials, guidance, and feedback that will stimulate them to find their own ways of learning, to achieve success both in their studies and in applying their knowledge to solve problems in their lives.

I find teaching rewarding because I have opportunities not only to share my clinical skills, knowledge, and expertise with students, but also to learn much from the discussions and insights presented by students.

I like reading, listening to music, gardening and travelling. I walk about an hour per day. I am trying to keep fit in order to take care of my family and job well. I hope you will work out a good balance between your work, home chores and study because your well-being is important. I hope you will enjoy this unit and I look forward to working with you in this semester.

Kind regards,
Flora

Thankyou Flora, it is lovely to meet you too. My name is Julie Symons, I did my bachelor of nursing at QUT and I have previous experience in undergraduate and graduate clinical facilitating with the NPDU at PAH. I am currently working at the PAH and have worked in many areas such as periop, ICU, mental health and day surgery. I had my children and am now returning to study. I haven't studied for a while but am looking forward to this learning experience as I really want to return to teaching and facilitating so I decided to undertake this course to pursue this area in my nursing career as I absolutely loved teaching and facilitating grads and undergrads. Personally, most of my time is organising the kids and house and we try to do things outdoors as much as possible like bushwalking and bike riding.

I am Meg Howe, currently I am based at Epworth in Melbourne. I currently work to deliver medical clinical skills training, teach into undergraduate nursing and learning to deliver simulations within the centre and with some fellowship partners.

Feeling mostly excited and a tad nervous about starting studies this semester with ACU. Both ACU and the graduate certificate are new to me. Let's see how the inevitable work/life juggle goes!

My clinical background is in critical care but I have worked across a variety of areas. My special interest in is community care and I work a (very) part-time job at my local GP clinic.

Through this unit I am particularly looking at understanding the theories of learning (module 3) and applying this understanding to a current course that I am running within the hospital.

Interestingly, there is this ongoing debate at work as to if 'educator' or 'facilitator' is a more appropriate term to describe various positions within the department. I see this within the educational trends section, it will be interesting to see what comes up around this topic!

Looking forward to this semester, Meg

Nice to meet you all. My name is Stefan, I am a physiotherapist based in Townsville. Like a lot of the other participants in this course I think the biggest challenge for me will be balancing my time between family life, part time studies and full time work. During my career I have had a few roles as a clinical educator and I found them challenging and very enjoyable. Therefore I undertook this course to assist with career prospects in clinical education, increase my awareness of teaching methods and increase my tool box of strategies to teach in a clinical setting. So looking forward to the challenge, and good luck to everyone else.

Hi everyone,
My name is Alison, I am a physiotherapist from Brisbane currently splitting my time between working in ICU at PAH (hello Julie!), at ACU's school of physiotherapy teaching into their Cardiorespiratory subjects, and of course trying to keep up with two small children. This will be the first subject of a Grad Cert in Healthcare Simulation and my very first time studying
since the late 90's so I'm a bit nervous about how it will go! I've done a lot of physio teaching for under graduates and new grads but am looking forward to having some theoretical knowledge of teaching under my belt to help improve my teaching skills and be able to have a qualification in this area for the future. I love seeing students grow into graduate members of my team and educators themselves. There hasn't been much time lately for hobbies but I do enjoy a nice glass of red and kicking my feet up with a trashy magazine.

Huge welcome every one. My name is Chanchal , I work at the Austin Hospital In Neuro rehabilitation unit. I am quite liking being a rehabilitation nurse. I am originally from India and have been living in Melbourne for the last 5 years. I like this country especially for its multiculturalism.

The whole last year was pretty eventful for me. I had my first baby in April. I started studying Post graduate in Aged care
(after 10 years being away from studies with ACU itself ) and struggled a lot with my second semester ,as for the first sem my boy was just lying and smiling at me but for second semester he became so active that he want to type my assignments quicker than me. So as I am in the habit of studying from last year and I don't want all the hard work of retraining myself to study if I have any more gaps in studies , and because my career change as an educator for overseas nursing students I am taking up this course.

The best thing is my boy just started walking and every time I turn my computer on he reaches there. To check my unit outline itself I had to do it at work. Lets see how this year is going to be for me And it is a great pleasure to know everyone is excited about this course, so am I.

I've spent the last 15 years as a scrub/scout nurse in theatres where I have educated and preceptored new grad nurses. A big component of my current role is educating bariatric pt's pre and post op - which i thoroughly enjoy!! Returning to uni was a major goal for me and after many years i have finally built the courage to do it. I believe education is the key to our evolving profession and i hope to achieve through this course the knowledge to further enhance my skills and practice as a nurse and educator. I have the support of my incredible 7 year old son and my amazing family and i can't wait to start this adventure.

It makes me appreciate my profession and reminds me why I became a nurse.
I am hoping that by doing this course I can expand my knowledge base to incorporate this into my everyday work and help me to create a better understanding of what I do.
I decided that now was a good time to return to formal study as my 3 boys are young adults and even though I am doing this part-time around full-time work I can do this without too many distractions hopefully.

Hello All, My name is Alexis and I am currently working as a Clinical Nurse Educator of an Upper Gastrointestinal/Melanoma surgical ward. I have been in the position for two years but have worked on the ward for the last 10 years. I love my job. I think nursing is one of the most rewarding jobs, even when its 3pm in the afternoon and I haven’t had lunch. I completed my Bachelor of Nursing at UTS after completing my Enrolled Nursing and haven’t studied for quite some time. I feel with all the changes and expectations of the role I needed to do some study. I find it challenging trying to adapt to everyone’s different learning styles so I am hoping this course will give me the techniques and skills to provide the best education opportunities for the people I work with. I am a bit worried about how I will balance study and full time work but I can only try and know that all of us are in the same boat. I look forward to starting the course.

I am based in Alice Springs but fly or drive in and out of remote communities all around the NT. For example, next week on Thursday I fly from Alice Springs to Docker River (south/west of NT, within 10kms of the WA boarder), then fly to Lake Nash on Friday, which is approximately 10kms from the QLD boarder and is one of the most northern communities we service. So I needless to say I jump around a bit, and have a limited ability to access the internet or phone reception.
I'm originally from Victoria with my background being in Forensic Mental Health.

I'm hoping by taking this subject I will be able to provide support and facilitate learning to future peers who enter into such roles, and to follow another passion of mine - teaching!

Have a good semester everyone!

Good Morning to you all, my name is Belinda. I work in a public hospital in Sydney. I specialise in the field of Drug Health. On-line study is a new way for me to learn. This being my first unit of this course, I'm feeling anxious and excited. I have been working as an acting CNE for over 12months, prior worked as a CNS. This was a big shift for me professionally. I want to explore and expand my CE knowledge. Also learn new and more effective ways for me to improve my practice. After a few years of pondering I have made a commitment to my own development and enroll in postgraduate study.

My name is Tom and I am an Anaesthetic Registrar based in Sydney. I have encountered a lot of simulation based learning in my career thus far and found it most beneficial. I have enrolled in this grad cert to explore the theory behind such learning, particularly human factors, and to hopefully be able to set up and run my own simulation based learning. Best of luck to everyone.

Hi all,
My name is Nathalie and I'm working part time in clinical anaesthesia and part time in simulation in Melbourne (Monash Health). I'm in my last year of training in anaesthetics. I'm pretty passionate about teaching and am really looking forward to learning more about how to teach effectively as well as different methods of teaching and theories of learning.
It's been some time since I was a student and things have certainly changed in terms of the technology but I'm looking forward to it all.
Have a great semester!
Nat
