They need someone to lead them, an athority figure. It also plays into our flight of fight instincts. Several of the boys go with the fight approtch and learn how to survive on the island, like the instinct to hunt and gather food. While the others try to escape, by making a signal fire.

Marxist Critique- In the book you can definitely tell there is class structure and that there is conflict between the lower and upper class. The upper class in the book is Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. Trujillo is the leader of a dictatorship. The Mirabal sisters and many others however do not agree and are trying to "take over/overthrow" Trujillo. In the book it talks about how Trujillo says that the church and the Mirabal sisters are in his way. This is a very direct conflict between the upper and lower class. I think that the author obviously does not agree with a dictatorship and the economic society.

She can see the past and future, she had predicted the horrible earthquake and knew of her husbands terrible past that he hid from her. She has these visions and is so wise. The heart in this book is Clara's daughter Blanca. She is a hopeless romantic who fell in love with the poor servant boy that her father Esteban has been determined to kill. She has a heart of goal but also knows what life is all about and what she wants in it. The will is definitely Esteban, Clara's husband. He is the "patron" of this country village and if something doesn't go his way there is usually and tantrum awaiting. He is controlling and has done awful things in his youth from taking advantage of this power that he brought onto himself.

Her name is Julia, but the reader is never aware of her last name or much about her life. She and Winston only meet for the purpose of sex and this is made abundantly clear by Julia and Winston themselves. She is portrayed as a rebel of the society (or she thinks she is) but becomes uninterested whenever Winston tries to explain the deeper meaning of Ingsoc. 1984 also fails the Bechdel test miserably.
