Ivan Dimitrich Techervyako, a government official, while gazing through an opera glass sneezes right upon the head of a man sitting in front of him. The man was Brizzhalov, a civilian general serving in the department of Transportation. Techervyako apologizes to the officer but was embarrassed by his behaviour. The next day also he apologizes to Brizzhalov for his misbehaviour. Techervyako continues to apologies to Brizzhalov, but this only made him angry.
