They become an issue when these buried waste leak and persist persisting in soil or in ground waters which acts as our drinking water supply. They may also runoff into streams. In addition, if hazardous wastes are not disposed/managed properly, they will seep into and be retain in the natural environment.

Hazardous wastes will continue to be a problem if it is not minimized or recycled.

Another hazardous waste issue is the mismanagement of benzene-contaminated waste. These waste originates from petroleum storage. Petroleum contains benzene which is carcinogenic to human. Petroleum based hazardous waste can remain in the soil for decades or longer. Environmental degradation and clean-up cost will rise dramatically if the issue is not overcome immediately. These hazardous waste can pollute rivers and drinking water supplies as well as harm the wild life. For instance, toxic effect has been found in foetuses of mice and rabbits due to exposure to benzene during pregnancy. This will reduce their maternal weight gain, increase mortality, decrease foetal weight or length and delayed bone ossification.

Hazardous wastes are poisonous byproduct of manufacturing, farming, city septic systems, construction and other industries. It may be in the form of liquid, solid or sludge and contains chemicals, heavy metals, radiation, dangerous pathogens or other toxins. More and more of our everyday products contain toxic chemicals, such as mercury or PBDEs (flame retardant chemicals), and these toxic products are combined with a plethora of other chemicals, which eventually impact public health and the environment. There are laws to control the use of the thousands of new chemicals put on the market each year, but there is little regulation over disposal. By-products and intermediate chemicals, created during the manufacturing process, usually ended up in the waste which may be more chemically and biologically active than the finished products and thus potentially more harmful to the environment.

Asbestos only poses a risk to health when asbestos fibres are breathed in. Inhaling asbestos fibres may cause asbestos-related disease and death. When asbestos fibres are breathed in, they can lodge in lung tissue and cause inflammation, scarring and some more serious asbestos- related diseases, which usually take many years, if not decades, to develop. The four major asbestos-related diseases, in increasing order of severity, are: pleural plaques, asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Car workshops, food processing plants, chemical, paint and plastics manufacturing are all generate hazardous waste. For example, some industrial companies found that it’s much easier to dump poisonous chemicals in the ground or into waterways rather than discharge it properly. Hence, these poisonous chemicals can accumulate underground and stay in the underground for a long period of time. These chemicals will never evaporate or breaking down which they may continually spoil the groundwater that flows through the area.

Hazardous waste is defined as a liquid, solid, sludge or containerized gas waste substance that due to its quantity, concentration or chemical properties that may cause significant threats to human health or the environment if it is managed improperly (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, 1976). There are four different categories of hazardous waste that are subject to regulation. One of it is hazardous wastes from nonspecific sources involved in industrial processes such as spent halogenated solvents. Second is hazardous wastes from specific industrial sources such as untreated wastewater from the production of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Third are commercial chemical products that may be discarded used in the manufacture of drugs, detergents, lubricants, dyes and pesticides. And lastly, wastes that are classified as toxic such as vinyl chloride. Hazardous wastes can caused environmental problems, public health problems, polluters attempt to avoid responsibility and brownfields. Under environmental problems, the longer the hazardous waste, in the form of petroleum projects, such as MTBE, volatile organic compounds and PCB’s, remain in the ground, the farther it is going to spread. These chemicals can persistent in the environment for decades and even longer. Both environmental degradation and clean will increase the cost. It also can pollute rivers and drinking water supplies as well as harm wildlife. In public health problem, it will contaminate the drinking water supplies. In Woburn, this condition causes a cluster of leukemia cases in children. Toxin can seep into buildings built which causes indoor air problems, respiratory diseases and chemical sensitivity.

Issues related to hazardous waste are there is no appropriate disposal method available for this kind of waste such as inflammable materials, high polluting waste, toxic substances and hazardous materials. Other issues are the discharge of these hazardous waste. Most wastes from industrial were discharged either directly or indirectly to the environment. The growing development in industrialization also one of the factors of the increasing hazardous waste.

The various types of waste materials that fall under this heading can pollute the environment and threaten life in a number of ways. They can be found not only on land, but also in the air and water. Improper chemical waste disposable is yet another contributor to toxic waste. Potentially dangerous chemicals are used in a wide variety of industries and for many different purposes.

Toxic and hazardous wastes, whether with or without treatment would eventually end up in landfills. Although landfills are classified by what type of waste they can accept, the type of waste acfepted at any facility are not regulated or monitored adequately by state agencies. Therefore, companies have their own discretion regarding what waste is disposed in the landfill even if the law specifies otherwise. Landfills produce harmful gases, odors and leachates, which will contaminate the soil and eventually reach the groundwater. Even with state of the art technology, landfills will leak. The post closure period of landfills has raised concerns, in which many of these facilities are turned into base for athletic fields, playground, parking lots or other facilities. The post-closure can lead to cracks in the cover, and subsequently leakage. Any traces of heavy metals or radioactive elements left in the landfill would end up finding its way back into the community and the process of waste treatment will have to take place again.

Then other major problem also occur when the waste that being dispose especially in landfill might be leak into the groundwater. Since groundwater is one of the source of drinking water, and once it is contaminated, it is difficult to remove the groundwater contamination. when human consumed this contaminated water thus it will affect our health.

Read more: http://www.pollutionissues.com/Fo-Hi/Hazardous-Waste.html#ixzz4du145vwn

Hazardous wastes, defined under both federal law and state regulations, have toxic, corrosive, reactive, flammable, or persistently hazardous properties that make them dangerous or potentially harmful to human health or the environment. They can be in any form - liquids, solids, gases (in containers), or sludge. Some of these wastes can often be reclaimed or recycled, instead of being disposed. A common example is the distillation of a used solvent to make the solvent reusable.

This indicator shows recurrent generated wastes targeted by pollution prevention efforts. It does not include the following:
- One-time wastes from site remediation (usually large scale cleanup of contaminated soil and structures).
- Hazardous waste mixed with radioactive waste (from the U.S. Department of Energy at Hanford and other sites).
- Wastes reported by businesses that receive and manage hazardous waste generated by others (called TSDs for treatment, storage, and disposal businesses, or TSDRs if recyclers are included).
- Materials reused before becoming wastes, such as parts cleaner solvent that is continually purified in a closed-loop system.

Retrieve from http://www.ecy.wa.gov/beyondwaste/bwprogHW.html

Environmental Problems The longer hazardous waste, in the form of petroleum projects, such as MTBE, volatile organic compounds and PCB’s, remain in the ground, the farther it is going to spread. These chemicals can persistent in the environment for decades if not longer. Both environmental degradation and clean up costs rise dramatically the longer cleanups are delayed. Hazardous waste sites can pollute rivers and drinking water supplies as well as harm wildlife. Public Health Problems The most common public health threat hazardous waste poses is the contamination of our drinking water supplies. In Woburn, contaminated drinking water caused a cluster of leukemia cases in children. Contaminated soil also poses a problem. At Love Canal, toxins oozing out of the dump caused rashes, burns and other problems to both children and adults coming in contact with it. Toxins can also seep into buildings built above hazardous waste sites, causing indoor air problems, respiratory diseases and chemical sensitivity. Hundreds of people across New England are trapped in their contaminated homes waiting for the polluters or the environmental agencies to cleanup the contamination. The experience of living in a contaminated home not only ends normal life, but also can cause serious psychological illnesses.

Development in industralization where the increased use of potentially dangerous chemical consumer products.
3. Changes in law where the traditional disposal option to surface waters, estuaries, below ground or ocean have all been restricted and disposal to sanitary have been stopped.

It is very important to manage well the hazardous waste as it could cause several issues to the environment and also to human. One of the issue is health problem to the mankind. This can be seen when the hazardous waste is not properly managed, it will tend to retain in the underground water and thus it affects our water supply. For instance, in Wobun, there were a few cases causes the children to have leukemia due to contaminated drinking water.Toxins can also seep into buildings built above hazardous waste sites, causing indoor air problems, respiratory diseases and chemical sensitivity.

52441
Hazardous wastes are any form of waste whether it is solid, liquid or gas which can be harmful to living organisms and the environment with its certain quantity or concentration. For example, the issue on the polluted rivers in Penang. This is especially devastating for the Sungai Pinang. The main cause of this pollution is the dumping of toxic wastes from nearby factories. Besides, the dumping of wastes from a pig abattoir which is located near the river has not only resulted in bad odour and rendering the river black in colour but has also caused death of aquatic life and polluted the estuary and nearby sea.

Retrieved from http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2015/04/15/penang-rivers-turn-black-and-dirty/

The issue of intractable waste such as the production of carbon tetrachloride produced from solvents plant which is the feedstock for the production of CFCs.
2. Discharge standard is the restriction imposed by the environment related government to limit the discharge of waste water.

The hazardous waste issues is the issues related to the management of hazardous waste like paint, cleaning agent, solvent and etc. If those waste are manage improperly it can cause environmental pollution. For example, the longer hazardous waste in the form of petroleum which remains in the ground, after a long period the waste are going to spread. Due to the environmental degradation and clean up costs rise dramatically, the longer cleanups are delayed. Hazardous waste sites can pollute rivers and drinking water supplies as well as harm wildlife.

Example of hazardous waste include the pesticides. Pesticides are the only toxic substances released intentionally into our environment to kill living things. This includes substances that kill weeds (herbicides), insects (insecticides), fungus (fungicides), rodents (rodenticides), and others. One of the effect from releasing pesticides is in May 2010, scientists from the University of Montreal and Harvard University released a study that found that exposure to pesticide residues on vegetables and fruit may double a child’s risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a condition that can cause inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in children.

Public Health Problems

The most common public health threat hazardous waste poses is the contamination of our drinking water supplies.
