Chess and his friends, Hazel, Bea, Swedish and Loretta, have finally escaped Lord Kodak, who wanted to kidnap Chess because he is special. Chess was born in the fog, a deadly cloud that covers the world except the tops of two mountains, where all of the human race lives. They finally made it to Port Oro to heal their care giver, ms. E from fog sickness. while they are there, the leaders of Port Oro wanted Chess to find the lost compass, a special device that controlled the fog. Chess ends up getting kidnapped, and thankfully, saved. Chess and his crew fought Lord Kodak and Kodak blew up the compass. After thinking they failed, they found out Chess was truly the compass. in conclusion, they started to clear the earth of the fog.

Chess's dad gifted him a notebook of all his discoveries about the human life before the fog covered the earth. Many of the notes about life before the fog are incorrect mixing up many stories and saying myths are truth. Although its not accurate, its his only tie to the past world. its symbolizing the bridge across the modern world and the time period of this world. It is also his only tie to his father.

Chess had to make a very hard choice to save himself or to help the world. I have had to make many decisions in my life to either help others and sacrifice my comfort or be selfish and ignore others. Although his decisions where much more important, we share the feeling of emotions fighting each other.

Chess has been chased by Lord Kodak for a long time. Kodak is the reason Chess has the fog-eye. He was a science experiment because Kodak believed the legend that the boy with the fog-eye could control the fog. Lord Kodak wanted to control the fog so he could control the world. Kodak met his end when he fell into the fog and died.

after getting hurt by the driftsharks Chess learns that he has to be brave. if he continued to be scared and hide away from his problems he could get hurt. if he didnt help others and was selfish the world would become a slave to kodak

chess experienced internal conflict when he had to choose in between his own comfort and the fate of the world. he didnt think he was the one that had to find the compass. many others had risked their lives and not come back and he was scared.
