In the Valley of Ashes a symbol is the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, symbolizes that someone is always watching and what you deserve will always come to you, good or bad. "I followed him over a low whitewashed railroad fence, and we walked back a hundred yards along the road under Doctor Eckleburg’s persistent stare."

The Great Gatsby in chapter two Myrtle changes her dress 3 times first she has a blue dress she wore to the Valley of Ashes then the second time she changes into a brown dress when she went to New York city. Page 32 of the book chapter 2 says '' With the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change. Her laughter, her gestures, her assertions became more violently''

The Valley of Ashes shows the moral and social decay that comes from the unchecked chase for wealth. It stands for the struggles of the poor and the results of living in a society focused on greed and materialism. It symbolizes the dark side of the American dream, the moral and social decay that happens when people are obsessed with wealth and materialism.

So the point of this image and the evidence is to symbolize that there isn't anything. It's a place where is hopeless. There isn't anything but sadness basically, there's nothing around that looks good but simply just looks abandoned.But something that stood out to me is that the more they got close to the building, little light of hope was coming up but the biggest example was the man who was waiting there  with a big smile and happiness and hope. We should all take that as an example and have that faith that no matter what you go through good or bad always be happy and have faith that everything will be alright no matter how bad stuff may seem.

It can emphasize the moral decay and corruption beneath the surface of wealth and excess in the 1920s. The eyes watching can suggest that there is always someone or something always observing the characters. It can highlight the consequences of the character's carelessness and lack of intergrity, even if society looks the other way, someone or something may still be judging them.

The green light can symbolize how Gatsby's dreams, no matter how intensely he pursues them, remain out of his grasp. It can also be seen as a constant reminder of what he wants yet cannot truly have.
