The valley of ashes is a run down part of The Great Gatsby where everything is described as being gray and covered in ash. On page 25 it says, " ...there is a horrible stretch of road that goes through an area covered in dust and ash from the nearby factories." Ash is the remains of something burnt, so the symbolism behind that is that these are people and a place have lost their beauty, their life, their dreams. This is a poor place where wealth does not reach. Even the people are covered in gray ash: explaining their lives are desolate, sad, hopeless, and everything negative that is associated with ashes. However, we can also see the positive in this, because there is a saying from the Bible, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" which talks about our mortality but also HOPE.

The valley of ashes in The Great Gatsby represents the bad and emptiness left behind when people focus only on money and success. It's a poor, dirty area that shows the gap between the rich and the poor. The people who live there like George and Myrtle Wilson struggle while the wealthy characters live in luxury. On chapter 2, page 25 Fitzgerald describes it as a "fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills". This place shows how the pursuit of wealth can lead to a sad, empty, leaving some people overlooked and forgotten.

The reckless behavior displayed here, with Tom’s affair and his physical aggression toward Myrtle, shows the darker, unrestrained side of the characters.

The valley of ashes is a place that is told to be abandoned and really empty where there is no hope and nothing to be there. As we read chapter 2 it can be shown and proven that all of these thing are true. It says … “It had occurred to me that this shadow of a garage must be a blind and that sumptuous and romantic apartments were concealed overhead when the proprietor himself appeared in the door of an office, wiping his hand on a piece of waste. He was a blonde, spiritless man, anatomic and faintly handsome. When he saw us a damp gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes.” (pg 27).

So the point of this image and the evidence is to symbolize that there isn't anything. It's a place where is hopeless. There isn't anything but sadness basically, there's nothing around that looks good but simply just looks abandoned. But something that stood out to me is that the more they got close to the building, little light of hope was coming up but the biggest example was the man who was waiting there with a big smile and happiness and hope. We should all take that as an example and have that faith that no matter what you go through good or bad always be happy and have faith that everything will be alright no matter how bad stuff may seem.

The valley of ashes symbolizes The breakdown of mortality caused by wealth and inequality, Decay , corruption , and the moral degradation of society. Like described in the book the valley of ashes is “ where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens,” “men who move dimly and are already crumbling through the powdery air .” It’s a dark town with regular people living a regular life , serves as a stark reminder of the disparity between the rich and the poor.

On the other side we have the East Egg that belongs to the people with Old Money, people who have inherited money from a family member. People who just spend and spend money because they don't know what it's like to earn it.

"In the Valley of Ashes a symbol is the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, symbolizes that someone is always watching and what you deserve will always come to you, good or bad. "I followed him over a low whitewashed railroad fence, and we walked back a hundred yards along the road under Doctor Eckleburg’s persistent stare."

It can emphasize the moral decay and corruption beneath the surface of wealth and excess in the 1920s. The eyes watching can suggest that there is always someone or something always observing the characters. It can highlight the consequences of the character's carelessness and lack of intergrity, even if society looks the other way, someone or something may still be judging them.

"Situated at the end of Daisy’s East Egg dock and barely visible from Gatsby’s West Egg lawn, the green light represents Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. Gatsby associates it with Daisy, and in Chapter 1 he reaches toward it in the darkness as a guiding light to lead him to his goal. Because Gatsby’s quest for Daisy is broadly associated with the American dream, the green light also symbolizes that more generalized ideal."

The green light can symbolize how Gatsby's dreams, no matter how intensely he pursues them, remain out of his grasp.
