Cady had lived in Africa for the majority of her life and when her family moved they decided to stop homeschooling her and she had to make a life for herself at her high school. While she was there she met her friends Damien and Janis who convinced her to hang out with Regina, Gretchen, and Karen all nicknamed "the plastics". When hanging out with them Cady starts to change her personality and her appearance turning into a mean girl and eventually the new queen bee. This later gets Cady into trouble with the entire school when Regina releases the pages from the Burn Book. Because of this, the girls is the school go wild and attack one another. To fix everything Cady "sucks the poison out" by taking full responsibility for the book and apologizing to everyone she wronged on her journey to self-discovery. Erikson was a German-American development psychologist who coined the phrase identity crisis and is most famously known for this psycho-social development model. He also served as a professor at Harvard and Yale. Erikson's development model's 8 stages are Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Role Confusion, Intimacy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and Ego Integrity vs. Despair. The most important part Erikson emphasized was that people develop through all ages and there was always be some type of crisis that will define your character at depending on how it is handled. As an adolescent, she was easily swayed by her new friends Janis and Damien to befriend the mean girls. When she did, she started to become just like them in terms of the way she dressed, acted, and her overall personality. Cady became a mean girl because she did not know who she was. During this stage of development, Erikson mentions that a person may try on different styles and take on different hobbies to find out who they are. In this movie, a large part of Cady finding who she is is by becoming a mean girl. Although the other characters did have a transformation as well it is better seen through Cady's view. The Identity vs. Role Confusion stage is precisely what we see from Cady as she conforms to a different person and later realizes that who she was becoming was not the woman she wanted to be. Cady had to come to the realization through losing her true friends and humiliating others that she was a mean girl and her actions had consequences that she now had to deal with. Although Cady was judged quite a bit by her peers and usually that would result in a negative effect but here she realized that her actions were wrong and that she needed to change.
