Abstract

There is a need for research about the understanding of students on programming languages and the factors that affect it.

This quantitative study investigates the big five personality traits, except for Neuroticism, as possible factors that can impact a

student's programming language understanding, finding a correlation between them. To achieve this, a 4-point Likert scale survey

questionnaire was utilized in the Philippine Christian University among Grade 12 TVL-ICT students. Results from a sample of 119

students found that the four personality traits, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Openness, and Conscientiousness, had no significant

relationship with Programming Languages C++ or Java. However, surprisingly it is also found that gender had a significant role in

understanding Programming Language, with males scoring higher than females. The answers from this study can be valuable to

future research, as well as open opportunity for more questions and deeper variables. Knowing what affects the understanding on

programming languages on students will give educators more data to work on in designing lessons and curriculums for

programming subjects.

Introduction

Programming is an essential skill for students

pursuing computer science and associated technologies.

Understanding the fundamental concepts is a critical

component of the development of learning (Piteira et al.,

2018). One of the main factors that affect a computer

programming student’s performance at their work is their

personality (PsychologyWriting, 2023).

Methods

The study focused on personality traits on

programming languages in grade 12 ICT students of PCU-

Manila.

This study focused on finding the relationship

between personality traits (Openness, Conscientiousness,

Extraversion, and Agreeableness) and programming

languages (C++ and Java) by gathering data from grade 12

TVL-ICT students via survey questionnaires, to identify how

these personality traits affect their understanding of

programming languages.
