In this exciting studio, students create their own original prints using techniques such as monoprint, relief, and intaglio. In learning these various printmaking techniques, students will explore infinite opportunities of mark making, achieving various motivations of creating printed works and to support the development of amplifying one’s artistic interests and understanding each print process.

Students will learn to steward the print shop and gain knowledge in handling inks, plate preparation, paper, registration, presses, and other basic equipment of the medium.

Participants experiment with composition, content, and color while learning the technical aspects of using acrylic paint.

A number of sessions focus on drawing from a clothed/costumed model, while others investigate both traditional and nontraditional approaches to various subjects, including nature, architecture, and abstraction.

Participants develop the ability to see and then translate visual experience into drawing, using pencil, charcoal, pastel, and other media.

Students flex their creative muscles, learning how to design memorable iconic characters, cinematic composition, and advanced comic storytelling techniques

The studio looks at live-action movie and animation clips as well as graphic novels to learn the basics of telling a story through visual means, including the significance of different points of view, close ups, far shots. Students may work with a variety of mediums, including pencil, pens, collage, and photographs to convey their own ideas.

Drawing will take place both in and out of the classroom. Participants may work with pencils, oil pastels, ink gouache, watercolor, and other creative mediums.

This class explores what constitutes a space and how we can define it using different mediums. Through a range of mini-projects, students learn how to bring their imagined spaces into reality, building 3D models with their hands, and then create an architectural project of their own design.

Mini projects involve sketching, model making with a variety of materials, storytelling, and writing. We also exercise how to present our work to others!

With family pets, our connection can be deep and emotionally rewarding. This studio focuses on drawing animals, working from images, imagination, and life. Participants create a large drawing of their favorite animal based on a smaller picture, using the grid system employed by artists for centuries; delve into their imaginations; and draw from animal taxidermy models -- as well as live animals that provide the challenge of capturing something that may not sit still!

Having been born in South Korea and experiences of migration to New Zealand and to the United States, her work finds its genesis in the narrative of migration and the role of Asian-diaspora chronicling the evolving perceptions of nationhood and cultural identity.

Through writing, research and studio practice, her work examines the account of collective and personal nostalgia and the systems of assimilation through objectification. Compelled by the intersection of arts, education and the impact created in enacting social changes, her practice extends into designing project based curriculum integrating technical skills to equip youth to exercise their voices and power. She currently holds a position as the Protest + Print lead instructor at Girls Garage and facilitates projects at Bay Area Art Stars Newcomers project and has exhibited at numerous institutions in the Bay Area.

HyeYoon obtained a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a MFA at the California College of the Arts.

He then took his studies to New York where he graduated Cum Laude with a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the New York Academy of Art.

She graduated from Aalborg University in 2020 with a MSc in Lighting Design and from NYU in 2015 with her BFA. She spent the 2015-2016 academic year as a Visual Arts Global Academic Fellow teaching Sculpture and Drawing at NYU Abu Dhabi. Emma has attended Artist Residencies at Djerassi (USA), Nature, Art and Habitat Residency (Italy), HEIMA (Iceland) and Holly and the Neighbors (USA). She is now the Imagery Collaborator to Jim Campbell where she creates and curates imagery for the Salesforce Tower “Day for Night” public artwork. She has shown her work in the United States, France, the United Arab Emirates, Iceland, Denmark and Italy.

Liz moved to the Bay Area in 2004 for college. She was the Director of the San Francisco Zine Fest from 2012 - 2015, and has been published in anthologies such as Tales From La Vida and Drawing Power: Women's Stories of Sexual Violence, Harassment, and Survival. She is an English professor at local community colleges and works to make reading and writing accessible to all students.

Prior to studying art, Wendy received her master's degree in sociology at Pittsburg State University and spent 20 years teaching sociology and the Chinese language at community colleges and high schools

Her art interests and focus are on changing the stereotypes and reducing hatred and violence against minorities in this country. As a proud Asian American and immigrant, she believes all humans are the same beneath the skin and all of us are vulnerable.

As a firm believer in giving back to the community, Duy has also worked with various non-profits organizations serving under-represented communities including caring for AIDS patients, tutoring children in families of domestic violence, and providing support for orphans in Buddhist temples and various indigenous tribes in Vietnam.

From a young age, Marion has always gravitated toward art as a method of expression for engaging with the world around her. She found her artistic style in high school when she attended drawing and painting courses through CCA’s pre-college summer program. Not long after, she began to participate in exhibitions in her hometown of Sacramento, including the 20/20 Show at the Kennedy Gallery in Midtown Sacramento and a youth invitational at the Crocker Art Museum. Marion has taught summer architecture and art courses at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Eugene, Oregon, and is now excited to be influencing young minds at CCA’s Young Artist Studio Program.
