In the beginning of the book during the reaping, Katniss' sister got chosen to be in the Hunger Games. This affected Katniss because she is very protective of her sister, and she knows that she'll probably die in there. So, she volunteers as one of the tributes. I know this because in the text it states "Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smoothes the slip of paper, and reads out the name in a clear voice. And it's not me. It's Primrose Everdeen." and "I volunteer!' I gasp 'I volunteer as tribute!" These two pieces of evidence from the book The Hunger Games proves that Prim getting chosen to be a tribute affects Katniss in a way.

I added Girl On Fire by Alicia Keys because it reminds me of the nickname Cinna calls Katniss which is girl on fire. The lyrics state "Looks like a girl, but she's a flame So bright, she can burn your eyes Better look the other way You can try, but you'll never forget her name." These lyrics remind me of chapter 5. It stated "I want the audience to recognize you when you're in the arena.' says Cinna dreamingly. 'Katniss, the girl who was on fire." This is why I think Girl on Fire represents the nickname Cinna calls Katniss.

I added Stuck In My Head by Twice because it reminds of the interviews with the tributes at how Cinna told Katniss that she had to remembered/stuck in peoples head during the games. The lyrics state "Your heart will melt and tremble Your heart will be conquered by my chic charm You can't let your guard down." These lyrics remind me of chapter 9. The text states "I don't find you so. The prep team adores you. You even won over the Gamemakers. And as for the citizens of the Capitol, well, they can't stop talking about you. No one can help but admire your spirit." This is why I added Stuck In My Head to my playlist.

I added Watching Him Fade Away by Mac DeMarco because it reminds me of when Peeta was dying. The lyrics state "And even though we barely know each other It still hurts watching him fade away, watching him fade away" and "The thought of him no longer being around Well sure it would be sad but not really different" These lyrics remind me of chapter 19. The text states "His foreheads burning up. Like the medicine is having no effect at all. Suddenly, out of no where, I'm scared he's going to die." and "What am I supposed to do? Sit here and watch you die?' I say. He must know that's not an option. That the audience would hate me. And frankly, I would hate myself, too, if I didn't even try." This is why I think Watching Him Fade Away represents when Peeta was dying.

I added Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift because it reminds me of the reaping when Prim got chosen and Katniss volunteered as tribute instead. The lyrics state "I remember tears streaming down your face When I said I'll never let you go When all those shadows almost killed your light

I remember you said, 'Don't leave me here alone' But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight" These lyrics remind me of chapter 2. The text states "Prim is screaming hysterically behind me. She's wrapped her skinny arms around me like a vise. 'No, Katniss! No! You can't go!' 'Prim let go,' I say harshly, because this is upsetting me and I don't want to cry." This is why I think Safe and Sound represents the reaping when Katniss volunteered as tribute.

In the middle of the book during the actual hunger games, Katniss tried to get away from the careers after they tried to kill her when she was up in a tree. In chapter 13 the text stated "This could be it' I think. What chance do I have against them? All six are there, five careers and Peeta, and my only consolation is they're pretty beat up, too. Even so, look at their weapons. Look at their faces, grinning and snarling at me, a sure kill above them." Because the careers tried to kill Katniss, she obviously had to find a way out of her situation. To get out of her situation a little girl named Rue made her realize that there was a tracker jackers nest above her. Thus making her chop it down and make her great escape. This shows that Katniss had found a way to get out of her situation with not too many injuries.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games is a book about a place called Panem. In Panem there is an event called the Hunger Games. For the Hunger Games there is one boy and girl chosen from each of the 12 districts. To win the Hunger Games you have survive many things such as hunger, thirst, death, and more. Also you have to kill the other players in the Hunger Games to win. The main character Katniss volunteered to be in the games after her younger sister Primrose was chosen.

Overall, after reading The Hunger Games, I loved it. I would totally recommend it to others. This is because of many things that are in the book, such as: suspense, romance, and plot twists. My favorite part of the book was chapter 19 because, Katniss found Peeta, and took care of him. My favorite character in the whole book has to be Rue. This is because of how a like we are. We both love music, we're both nice, clever, and trustworthy. If I could change a thing or two about the book it would have to be the beginning of the book, and Rue dying. I would change the beginning of the book because it wasn't very interesting. There wasn't anything that kept me hooked or making me pay attention until chapter 5 or 6. I would also change Rue dying to something else completely, like Katniss dying or Rue getting hurt instead. One technique the author used that I really liked was Katniss's flashbacks. One example of this is in chapter 2. The text states "I stared at the loaves in disbelief. They were fine, perfect really, except for the burned areas. Did he mean for me to have them? He must have. Because there they were at my feet. Before anyone could witness what had happened I shoved the loaves up under my shirt, wrapped the hunting jacket tightly about me, and walked swiftly away. The heat of the bread burned into my skin, but I clutched it tighter, clinging to life. By the time I reached home, the loaves had cooled somewhat, but the insides were still warm."

One of the themes in the book The Hunger Games is government control. The message the author is trying to convey is that "the government can control you and try and scare you into things" I know this because of chapter 1 page 18 and 19. The text states " Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch - this is the Capitol's way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand of surviving another rebellion. Whatever words they use, the real message is clear. ''Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you. Just as we did in District Thirteen.” The theme and evidence connect because the government (Capitol) is using the Hunger Games as a way to control their citizens and scare them into doing things they don’t want to do.

One of the other themes of the book The Hunger Games is sacrifice. The message the author was trying to express is, "if something or someone you love is in harms way or in danger, you will sacrifice yourself for it." I know this because in the novel in chapter 1 and 2 page 20 and 22. The text states "Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smoothes the slip of paper, and reads out the name in a clear voice. And it’s not me. It’s Primrose Everdeen. "Prim!'' The strangled cry comes out of my throat, and my muscles begin to move again. ''Prim!'' I don’t need to shove through the crowd. The other kids make way immediately allowing me a straight path to the stage. I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. ''I volunteer!'' I gasp. ''I volunteer as tribute!" The evidence and the theme connect because Katniss sacrificed her safety and life for her own sisters well-being.

Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is a character who is brave, skilled, and hostile. At the start of the novel Katniss is hostile, and bland with her emotions. I know this because in the text it states, "Prim, let go,” I say harshly, because this is upsetting me and I don’t want to cry. When they televise the replay of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as an easy target." and "Likable. He has a sort of self-deprecating humor naturally,'’ says Haymitch. “Whereas when you open your mouth, you come across more as sullen and hostile.” During the events that unfold, Katniss begins to actually show some emotion, and doesn't seem as hostile as before. This can be seen in chapter 18, when it states " I’m going to. Going to win for both of us now,'’ I promise. I hear a cannon and look up. It must be for the boy from District 1. "Don’t go.’’ Rue tightens her grip on my hand. "Course not. Staying right here,'’ I say. I move in closer to her, pulling her head onto my lap. I gently brush the dark, thick hair back behind her ear." At the end of the novel Katniss is shown to be emotional. This information is shown when the novel expresses "Petrified, I lunge for him, but I’m caught and thrust back into another room, and a glass door seals between us. I pound on the glass, screaming my head off. Everyone ignores me except for some Capitol attendant who appears behind me and offers me a beverage. I slump down on the floor, my face against the door,
staring uncomprehendingly at the crystal glass in my hand." To sum it up Katniss has changed from being boring, unemotional, and hostile, to actually showing emotion, being not so hostile, and being a real person.
