My father's family is from Germany. The first of his ancestors came to America in the late 1800's. My mothers family is from England. Her ancestors first came to America in the early 1800's. 

A generalization about my culture that is true is that I have a father who was the main provider for our family. My mother stayed at home to take care of the house and to raise my 3 sisters and myself. We have always lived in an affluent neighborhoods. My family encouraged my sisters and I to pursue our dreams and learn more about them so we would be successful in our adult life. 

A generalization about my culture that is not true is that white people are all educated and successful. My father was the first in his family to attend college. Before that, his mother, was the only one in his family to have a high school degree. My mother did not finish college and her parents have a high school education. After I complete this Master of Education program, I will be the only person in my family to earn a higher education degree. Because I am one of four children, my mother did not earn a high enough of a salary to afford to find private day care of us to stay while she worked. My father and her made the decision that it would be best for her to stay home with us. 

It was my sisters and mine's responsibly to do our part to keep the household running smoothy. We had chores and other expectations to complete before we could relax or go to social events. 

Now, I am married and roles are different. My husband and I both have full time jobs that we both plan to keep once we start a family. We believe to treat others as you would like to be treated and to help someone when they are in need.

Outside of holidays, we have traditions that celebrate us as a family. We typically gather for one event a month. Although everyone in my family was born and raised in the "bible belt", I have many diverse denominations of the Christian faith in my family. 

My fathers family are life long Lutherans. They are very active in their church which their family has been apart of for hundreds of years. 

My mothers family are apart of the Church of Christ. Her family is also very active in their church community and are involve in many volunteer and social activities. 

My family started attending a Methodist church when we moved to Northern Virginia in 2000. We chose this church because it was a good mixture of my parents denominations. I went through confirmation in 2002 and have been a member of the Methodist church ever sense. 

My husband is also a life long Methodist. His family is part Baptist and Methodist. 

My husband and I got married in the Methodist church he grew up in. In our marriage, we practice Christian morals. My husband and I joined a Methodist church in Augusta this past year. It is believed that when one works hard, they will be rewarded for their efforts. 

All four of my grandparents grew up farming in rural North Carolina. They had to work hard to survive on huge family owned farms. This same work ethic has been passed down to my parents and to my siblings. My parents taught us that we cannot do things that are fun until we earn them. My parents never told my sisters or me what we had to be educated in, it was made known that we found something of our interest and pursue education.

My father went to college with the goal to have a career in animal science. He graduated from his undergrad with two degrees. Although he worked hard for those degrees, he has found a life long career in law enforcement. My parents made it clear to us that having some sort of a degree would be our key to a successful future. 

When I expressed that I was interested in pursue a higher education degree, my parents and husband were very supportive of me. While I have been working towards this degree, I have had an excellent support system that encourages me. 

It is interesting to me, to look at my family from an outside source. Although my sister and I have had the same experiences, she does not value education as much as I do. My ancestors have made their way from poor North Carolina farmers to successful middle class citizens. In my personal life, I have been told I could not do things because I was not smart enough, or did not have what it took. I have proved those people wrong by my work ethic and my morals.

Another stereotype that is not true is that white people, especially southerners, discriminate against minorities. This is extremely untrue in my family. My family supports members to explore other nationalities and cultures. 

Below is a chart of stereotypes that people of white culture have. This is a good chart because it explains each category. Although my family does fall into many of these stereotypes, there are some that we do not.

My mother is from Henderson, North Carolina and my father is from Concord, North Carolina. My grandfather is one of twelve children. His name is Lynn Ritchie and his parents are Louis and Ella Ritchie. My grandmother is one of nine children. Her name is Kate Ritchie and her parents are John and Pearl Moose. On my mothers side, there is also many people involved. My grandfather was one of 4 children. His name is Donald Coghill and his parents were named Clarence and Grace Coghill. My grandmother is also one of four children. Her name is Faye Coghill and her parents are named Marion and Mildred Beckham.
