(1) How do we make digital literacy interest-driven for students?

As teachers, we should provide and teach students authentic materials that they are interested in, also canapply in the real world. Because students are able to make deeper, more meaningful connections between content if they have engaged with it in personal and authentic ways. I think the book trailers is a very interesting project that students will feel passionate about.

Teachers should encourage students to follow their own interests. In this project, students can choose the books based on what they like.

(2)How do we provide opportunities for students to support each other in creating, producing, and writing?

In order to facilitate meaningful collaboration, teachers should carefully design the learning tasks that require different forms of collaboration, in which authors share varying responsibilities and make contributions together. In this project, students will need to collaborate together to create the book trailer. Students will need to discuss the design of layout and how to attract the audience’s attention. In addition, book trailer will develop skills in problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration.

In my opinion, Shadow Puppet EDU is a great digital writing tool that’s very suitable for the younger kids, because it’s a very simple, intuitive and kid-friendly video creation app.

This app is totally free on iPad and the interface is very user-friendly. Moreover, this app has a built-in web search for images, the kids can search the images directly from the library of Congress, NASA, Flickr Creative Commons…etc. The app can record narration and add music, or both. Students can develop digital storytelling skills and improve creative digital writing. Also, the user can add animated text and draw on the screen.

Even though, Shadow Puppet EDU is a very simple and kid-friendly app, but there are still some limitations, for example the fonts of the animated text or the length of the total video.

After listening to Jesse’s lesson about digital literacy, I am really interested about the craft of book trailer. I think the activity of creating book trailers is a very interest-driven and academically-oriented project.

Book trailer activities require students’ critical reading and writing skills. First, students need to understand the plot, character, setting, atmosphere and genre in the books before they can create the book trailer. In addition, it allows students to practice how to be concise and careful with their expression to have maximum impact on their audience. Moreover, students need to make decision about the structure and layout of the trailer. Last, they encourage students to read a book critically so they have a strong idea of what their trailer needs to convey.
