Tammin started off covered by woodlands then later cleared for agriculture. More than 95% woodland was removed/cleared for wheat and sheep farms, in the late nineteen and 20th centuries. To this day Salinity is a major threat to all these farmlands (specifically Tammin).

What Causes Salinity

It starts off as rain falls, the reservoir begins to fill the/a valley. This shows how rain on the gentle uplands drains through the soil into the valley floors. Lands used before they were cleared the woodland trees that once covered this place used the water brought by rains but for cleared lands for farming, there aren’t as many trees and so then the water table begins to rise. When this water rises, it carries salts that were stored underground. Later on, these salts gather the soils over long periods of time but the rising water table pushes them to the surface which damage farmland.
