This was a spot ABC News did in wake to the reaction to this commercial after is was release. The comments in the section of the YouTube page were so vile, that they had to disable the comment section. However, Cheerios continued to show the commercial, even after the public out cry. Michael Burgi, a features editor at Ad Week, even said "15% of all married couples are in mix relationships". Simple put, the commercial was simply reflecting a the cultural change that was happening to the American Family in society.

The was an ad that was created in 2013 showing a conversation between a daughter and her mother. What made this commercial the center of all the attention was the fact the family in the video was a bi-racial family. Cheerios, in my opinion, made an attempt to show that families, literally, came in all different shapes and colors.

I choose to do my padlet board on cultural change, in particular how it relates to family. As the text states "Ads may also function as a barometer of cultural change" (Silverblatt, 305). With the following ads, I will show how advertising is making an attempt to not only reflect what we are seeing in our society, but also how these families are now being represented.

This video, that was aired in 1986, shown two different families, both white, who recent won a sweepstakes to which each one won $2 million dollars. Just like I said about the previous video, this seemed, at least to me,to be common place in regards to advertising in the past. I don't think that was the intention of the commercial, be you can see the stereotype images of an rich white family (well dress, pearls, grand room with a fireplace).

As you see in the video clip, there is an all black family siting here enjoy a meal as one. There were many commercials such as this that were considered commonplace, even today. One could make the stereotype comparison of the black family eating chicken, however, overall this image tried to give a positive image to the black family.
