The Stock Market crashes of October 1929 and October 1987 happened during periods of economic prosperity where stock prices skyrocketed to an all time high. But with every high there is an equivalent low. It's this equivalent low from the all time high that makes people panic and start panic selling. Panic selling is basically cutting you losses during an stock drop. But with the dorp being quite significant it caused a quite a significant number of people to start panic selling. During the panic on average 14 million bonds a day were being traded while the usual average was 4 million a day. People panic selling to cut their losses caused bonds to be practically worthless hence the crash.

What followed the stock market crashes of 1929 and 1987 was economic downturn. Not only for the United States but the entire World. In the Crash of 1929 created a downward spiral that lasted until about 1932 and help towards the causes of the Great Depression .While the stock market crash of 1987 only lasted 2 year before the stock prices peaked again which was not followed by a depression or recession . What also followed in both crashes was federal legislation to prevent another stock market crash, hence preventing another economic downturn.

What Caused It

Many things caused the overall downfall of the stock market crashes. With the main reason being that everyone was afraid of losing their money. When it came down to it many people who were in the stock industry were big rich people trying to make off a profit real fast but when others from lower classes tried to get into it with the bank it all when downhill. Stocks at the time were very overpriced so there wasn’t too much money to be made, plus all the money used to by the stocks was money borrowed from the bank. Then though when people saw that a recession was going to happen they started trying to sell their stocks before prices fell and they lost their money which actually is what ended up happening anyways.

The role that the Federal government played during the October crash in 1929 and 1987.

In the beginning of the crash 1929 the government played no role at all. They believed if they backed out and didn't mess with anything the economy would fix itself, but them not doing anything didn't help at all. Finally FDR became president and started the New Deal, which involved the Federal government. The crash in October of 1987 the government had learned its lesson from crash in 1929 and stepped right away to lesson the effect.
