In this topic we look at what people believe about God, using faith and evidence, religion in Scotland, sectarianism and Hinduism. This unit is completed with a written assessment.

Belief in action

In this unit we look at some of the key beliefs found in different world religions, and how these key beliefs influence the way religious people live their lives. Pupils are offered the choice to look at 3 of the following: Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity. This unit is assessed by a comparative leaflet about what we've learned.

S1 Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS) is about encouraging our young people to 'think positively about thinking'! This means we prompt everyone to discover through reasoning and questioning what they believe; what others believe; and how this impacts actions and behaviours. RMPS aims to develop tolerance, understanding and compassion for our fellow human beings.

My child asks me about a difficult topic. What do I do? Be honest and willing to admit if you don't know something, but you could look/discuss possible answers together.
How do I support my child in their RMPS work at home? Be curious, ask questions and listen to what they think. Try and allow them to develop their thoughts before offering yours.

Modern Studies

S1 pupils experience two Modern Studies topics across the year - Children's Rights and Democracy in Scotland.

In the Democracy in Scotland topic, pupils learn about the differences between democracies and dictatorships and why participation in a democracy is important. They then go on to look at different levels of government and the role of the media where they analyse different stories and are taught skills about checking reliability and bias.

In the Children's Rights topic, pupils are exploring the UN Rights of the Child. We will be looking at selected rights and comparing life in Scotland to life in other countries.

In S1 History we learn about ancient Scotland and compare this to another civilisation. During life in Pictish Scotland we will cover how people lived, fought, ate, and behaved. Pupils will learn how the Picts compared with Ancient Egypt and if these civilisations are different. Pupils will learn how to analyse sources, discuss ideas and develop their literacy skills.

Geography

S1 pupils complete two blocks of Geography over the course of the session - Scotland's Geography and Climate Change.

The climate change topic covers the causes, impacts and solutions from a local and personal perspective through to national and international impacts and strategies such as the decisions reached at COP 26. Pupils made a climate pledge which was displayed in the school and were assessed in an end of unit knowledge test completed online.

Scotland's Geography introduces a number of Geographic concepts such as the formation of features and the impact of human activity on the environment. Pupils learn about the ice age, the landscapes it left behind and how this affects our use of the land today. We then look at the value of landscapes and consider the importance of Scotland's stunning rural environments. Pupils will complete a number of short research based homework activities in this topic including a thematic world map, an agents of erosion worksheet and a revision style quiz. The topic is normally assessed via a group presentation which we hope to reinstate once restrictions permit.

This is displayed in the department 'you said, we did wall' - which gives examples of pupil feedback which we use to progress learning and enjoyment within our faculty.

Learner Conversations
