Life as a civilian in the Vietnam war was essentially a survival tournament. Civilians lived in fear of being massacred at random. This fear led many to have a kill or be killed mentality. This is seen in poem F, where a Vietnamese woman felt she had no choice but to attempt to take a shoot at an American soldier in order to increase her chances of survival. She failed in her attempt but it goes to show the mentality of civilians in Vietnam during the war.

Being a civilian in the Vietnam war was terrifying because civilians often had the most difficult time with being suspected of being a communist from the north as seen in photo C with a south Vietnam official pointing a gun at a civilian who is believed to be a communist spy from the north who snuck into their territory. This is relevant because the south had no idea of who the enemies were due to the guerilla tactics the north had. Therefore, random civilians were often suspected to be spies making living during the Vietnam war terrifying and hopeless because of the uncertainties of who is the enemy and who is not.

-Jay

Life in Vietnam was chaotic especially being a soldier. Imagine working a regular job then abruptly being pulled out of it to defend your country's idea to become a communist or capitalist society. Often, people in the war were confused who they were up against in the Vietnam war and we can see this specifically being demonstrated in document C, when a man on the police force points their gun at a young boy. This exemplifies how confusing it was to a war in your own home country. People were constantly confused who they were up against and what their beliefs were that made the war disordered.

Being both a civilian and soldier during the Vietnam war is terrifying. As a civilian you could be accused of being one of the communists even if you weren't. Even if civilians claimed they weren't communists, there is still a chance that they would end up hurt or losing their home. Soldiers during this time was terrifying as well because as the times changed, these soldiers could think more humane and being forced to do terrible things to others could be a mentally damaging task. In conclusion both civilians and soldiers have hard lives and these events are not in their hands.
