During this stage, babies develop a balance between trust and mistrust, they develop a sense of reliability. Trust allows babies to form relationships. Mistrust allows babies to protect themselves. If trust is most prominent, the child will develop hope. If mistrust is most prominent, the child will "view the world as cruel and unfriendly" (Martorell, 2020). According to Erikson, our experiences are the key to developing trust. I know I developed trust as an infant because of the Attachment Theory. The Attachment Theory concludes that infants become attached when they feel safe and loved by their caregiver. In other words, when they trust their caregiver. During this stage of development, toddlers start to become more independent. According to the textbook autonomy vs shame and doubt is the "stage in psychosocial development, in which children achieve a balance between self-determination and control by others," (Martorell, 2020). SHame and doubt are necessary because unlimited freedom is dangerous. Shame and doubt help toddlers recognize the need for the limits adults set. The independence children develop during this stage is known as the "terrible twos" in the United States. Many children show negativism to a degree. It usually starts at age 2 but declines by age 6. Will emerges during this stage. A parent's view of their child's expression of self-will influences the development of autonomy. Parents who view the expression positively can help their child learn self-control. I know that I developed autonomy when I was a toddler because I was always trying to do things on my own. Early childhood is the period from 3 to 6 years old. During this stage, "children balance the urge ro pursue goals with reservations about doing so," (Martorell, 2020). During this time preschoolers are learning to do more things, but they are also learning that some things they want to do, don't meet social approval. This stage divides the personality into two parts: "the part that remains a child and the part that is becoming an adult," (Martorell, 2020). Children who can regulate the two "develop the virtue of purpose, the courage to envision and pursue goals without being inhinited by guilt or fear of punishment," (Martorell, 2020). Middle childhood is the period from 6 to 11 years old. During this stage children develop self-esteem. According to the textbook, industry vs inferiority is the stage "in which children must learn the productive skills their culture requires or else face feelings of inferiority," (Martorell, 2020). Inferiority is the feeling of low self-worth. It is important that children learn skills that are valued in their culture so they don't feel this way. If this stage is successfully resolved, children view "themselves as being able to master skills and complete tasks," (Martorell, 2020). I know I developed Industry because I learned how to achieve goals with skills valued by my society. Adolescence is the period between 11 and 20 years old. According to Erikson, confronting the crisis of identity vs identity confusion is the chief task of adolescence (Martorell, 2020). The sense of self builds on earlier stages and "lays the groundwork for coping with adult life," (Martorell, 2020). During this stage, teens start to figure out the role they are going to play in society. Adolescence provides a timeout period for teens called the psychosocial moratorium. This time allows teens "to search for commitments to which they can be faithful," (Martorell, 2020). I know I am currently in Erikson's fifth stage of psychosocial development.
