And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."

Literary device + Analysis:

The author is using the connotations associated with 'fool' to depict women as the inferior, powerless sex in society.

There is also a juxtaposition between 'beautiful' and 'fool' (in the sense that beauty is significant and powerful yet being a fool is not), which highlights the contradictory expectation of society on women in that they're romanticized as being 'beautiful', yet otherwise remain as insignificant, powerless fools.

I find Daisy an interesting character because she complies to societal expectations. The notion of social structure and categorization intrigues me due to its taboo expectations and Daisy’s dialogue is reflective of her own role and purpose in the novel and life, i.e. being "beautiful" yet a "fool". That's exactly what Daisy Buchanan is, and what she chooses to remain as throughout the novel. This is expressed on pg. 76 of the novel when she reads the letter from Gatsby and sends back the pearls to Tom. The pearls symbolizes the beauty in them, but also symbolizes the foolish choice to give them (very expensive) back to its owner.

Music I think connects to Daisy Buchanan:

Lana Del Rey- Young and Beautiful

https://youtu.be/o_1aF54DO60?si=p-e74SueVyHWxQ0V

Quote: "He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them one by one before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many-colored disarray."

Literary device + Analysis:

The author is using the literary device of symbolism because Gatsby wants Daisy to see his nice and fancy shirts and this represents his love for her. This quote is important to the text because it shows the reader that Gatsby wants Daisy back so badly that he is willing to throw all of his nice and folded shirts onto the floor.

I decided to write a letter about Gatsby because I find him interesting. He is very mysterious and he is also a war veteran. He throws many parties at his house and all of the people in New York show up every time. Nick first saw this character when Gatsby was on the dock and was looking at the green light which also symbolizes his envy for wanting Daisy back. The last reason that I chose this was because I know the most about him and what his character wants.

I think the song Shiny from the movie Moana represents him well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93lrosBEW-Q

She like many others understand how cruel the world is and how its better not to know. then to know all the problems this world can offer. This goes in part to the stereotype that women are the less superior gender.

I think this song goes well with Daisy:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKPg8ulhFFI

Quote: “Oh, you want too much!” she cried to Gatsby. “I love you now—isn't that enough? I can't help what's past.” She began to sob helplessly. “I did love him once—but I loved you too.”

Literary device + analysis:

The author uses tone to describe how Daisy feels about the relationship between her and Gatsby along with her other love Tom. The author also uses imagery by saying she sobbed helplessly. This helps make an image in your head of Daisy balling her eyes out and not being about to stop no matter what. This quote explains how Daisy has found out she loves two people. Gatsby feels that it is not enough because he is not the only one. Daisy is blaming the past for having these feelings. Explaining how she loved him ad Gatsby both.

I find Daisy as a fascinating character in the book. She acts like she is innocent and doesn't know what is happening. But deep down she knows the affair that Tom has and how much love she has for Gatsby. But the past is not allowing her to move on and she feels stuck. Daisy is intriguing because she never seems to be able to make up her mind. She knows what she wants but won't go get it. Both Tom and Gatsby would be able to give her almost anything she's ever wanted in life. Her life has been good with Tom and with her child she doesn't know if it is worth it to leave him and pursue her love for Gatsby.

Music I think represents Daisy Buchanan:

“In Love With Another Man” by Jazmine Sullivan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s96nlATQCGU

Quote: "Cant repeat the past? Why of course you can"

Literary Device + Analysis:

The author is using point of view in this because gatsby gives his opinion on repeating the past "why of course you can". My analysis of this quote gives a hint that Gatsby wants to return back to daisy which is his past love.

I find Gatsby Interesting because the fact that Gatsby can not accept the truth, Daisy is married with a child and he is deliusional if he thinks that he can repeat the past when reality is daisy has moved on. I think Gatsby is preoccupied with the past that he doesnt look at the reality of the situation. This is why I think that Gatsby is an interesting character.

I think the song Let me love you by DJ Snake represents him well because he wants to love diasy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMs0GnYze34

We can see that the scene portrays emotions of love from Gatsby and regret from Daisy.

I chose Gatsby because he wrote the letter. I would like to see what Gatsby would write. I also want to see how Gatsby's money would come into play, like mess with his thoughts and/or choices. Gatsby is interesting because he wrote the letter to begin with. I would like to know what motivated Gatsby to try and life the past. Maybe it was war or maybe something else. But why is gatsby writing to someone who he has not been with? Maybe he is stuck in the Past.

Song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyy0iBXsYJs

The author pulled from the message of the American Dream and how go getting and hard work pulls you up the social latter. How the author took the time to shed attention to the moment and the action from which Gatsby chose to go for change. How Gatsby would fight for the dream get away life he so craved.

I chose to write about Gatsby because through the book I believe Gatsby is the main focus to convey the message of the American Dream. When Gatsby is introduced himself or through other characters he is represented as all about the money and status. Later on the author opens him and shows a softer side of him when it comes to Daisy. I think there are many layers of Gatsby and it all needs to be explored and understood to find the true meaning and understanding of his purpose of the change and the drive and how it’s going.

I think Pussycat Dolls “When I grow Up” best represents Gatsby and his journey. https://youtu.be/K0K46C82v9o?feature=shared

"Everybody thinks so- the most advanced people. And I know. I've been everywhere and seen everything and done everything."

Literary Device + Analysis:

The author uses a hyperbole by having Daisy assume, therefore exaggerate, that everybody, including advanced people think everything is terrible. This quote shows Daisy's negativity that she doesn't openly share, but keeps. She feels poorly about everything, and a lot is shared as well in the conversation this quote is from.

I chose to write about Daisy and write from her perspective because I personally find her a very interesting and deep character.

Quote: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and . . . then retreated back into their money . . . and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

Literary device + Analysis:

The author is using symbolism when he says "retreated back into their money". They are going back to their materialistic things and think it's the right thing. They are selfish and don't care about anything but their wealth. This shows how the wealthy take advantage of their class status, and do whatever they want. Tom and Daisy cause a lot of trouble for everyone, and they make others clean up the messes they make. They make trouble then just run back to their money living the life that people dream of.

I picked Daisy because she has an interesting perspective on life. She is careless, but also knows the troubles in life. Daisy is selfish and acts like she is doing nothing wrong. She acts as if she is a good person. She play with peoples feeling and only cares about getting her way. She is highly materialistic and very wealthy. She only cares about wealth in her relationships, which is why she went for Tom, because at the time Gatsby was not as wealthy as he is now. Daisy has a lot of privilege so she takes advantage of it. She is very careless person, and just walks over people.

Song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPMKH_Vg_Zs

"It makes me sad because I've never seen such-such beautiful shirts before."

Literary device+ Analysis:

The author is using symbolism to show how it's not about the shirts that Daisy is sad about, it's about Gatsby's new found wealth that he gained over the years. She is ruined deep down in her heart because she married Tom instead of Gatsby.

I decided to write a letter about Daisy because I find her very interesting. Even though deep down in her heart she loves Gatsby she chooses Tom due to him being rich. This shows how in her perspective the American Dream is about materialistic things. Gatsby is doing this to get Daisy's attention and to show his love to her. This is important because it shows how Gatsby is trying really hard to get Daisy's attention and also get her to love him again.

I chose to write about Daisy because in a way she was one of the characters that stood out to me. I also chose her because she is a mysterious character and really interesting. She is a confusing character because even though she is married to Tom she still decided to go to Gatsby's house and have like a tiny date. What makes her a mysterious character is because she has multiple choices like she could break up with Tom and go back with Gatsby or stay with Tom and ignore Gatsby. Daisy went into Gatsby's mansion which could symbolize how she wants to marry or be with a rich man.

Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp4suZ4jNXg

Quote: “He looked at her the way all women want to be looked at by a man.”

Literary device + Analysis: The author used symbolism to get us the idea that Gatsby was really into Daisy. This quote tells us that Gatsby was the ideal man living a grand life. But he lacked the one thing he truly wanted, Daisy's love

I chose to write about Gatsby because hes been through a lot and somehow he changed and became rich. This sparked me because he took a 50/50 risk to become rich. He took a chance where he didn't know the end result but he kept going with his dream and in the end, he became the man he wanted to become. His background was harsh, he grew up in bad living conditions as his parents were poor farmers. On page 95 Nick describes Gatsby´s family, " His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people, his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all.¨ This quote shoes Gatsby didn't want to be like his parents in the future, so he left home and went on a journey to have a better life and become someone.

Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te11UaHOHMQ

At small parties, there isn’t any privacy.”

The literary device for this quote shows symbolism because it represents an abstract idea of Gatsby throwing parties. To elaborate the author uses symbolism associated with that Gatsby is saying that he likes large parties. This shows how Gatsby likes to party and throw them for people to come on over but keeps his identity a secret. Gatsby is a party type of guy and throughout the story, the author shows that.

I find Gatsby an interesting character because he talks about throwing these huge parties every night. I think Gatsby's American dream is just having people on his good side and just enjoying his wealth. I also choose Gatsby because I know he throws pretty nice parties that make everyone want to go and spend time. I also know Gatsby is a pretty wealthy man but Gatsby is a self-made man who just dreams about a good life and is focusing on the positive.

I think the song 100$ Bill by Jay-Z represents Gatsby well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyy0iBXsYJs

Dominic Houshmandi Period 5 English

Quote: "The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God—a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that—and he must be about His Father's business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty."

Literary Device + Analysis:

The author uses symbolism to convey Gatsby's change in attitude and lifestyle that will make him the rich man he is today. He uses it to represent how drastic the change is from back then to now. By stating that he was a son of God and completing His father's business. This is said because he didn't like his own parents and wanted a change so he doesn't view himself as his parent's son but as a son of God meaning he was meant for more. The author also uses style to make the change even more dramatic with his word choice and the way he composes the sentences.

I chose Gatsby because Gatsby was very much a mystery. We find out some more stuff bout his past but there's still a lot that remains a mystery. (Fitzgerald, 20-21)

Literary device + Analysis:

The author uses the symbolism of the green light to demonstrate Gatsby's goal. In this scene, Gatsby is said to be reaching towards the green light. This symbol foreshadows the scene later in the book where the green light vanishes. The vanishing of the light represents Gatsby's accomplished goal. His goal was to reconnect with Daisy after a long period of separation.

I wrote a letter based on Gatsby's point of view because I understand his character more than Daisy's. There is more incite to Gatbsy's feelings and thoughts than to Daisy. Gatsby is persistent in talking and meeting with Daisy; however, he is too nervous to invite her. One would think that a man with such wealth would have enough confidence to talk to an old friend. Gatsby moves across from Daisy's house, hoping she will appear at one of his parties. Gatsby goes as far as asking a neighbor to invite Daisy over for tea so that he can talk with her.

Music I think connects to Gatsby:

Idina Menzel, Evan Rachel- Show yourself

https://youtu.be/nrZxwPwmgrw?si=EkCkMwOgru92yQqD

He was a son of God—a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that—and he must be about His Father’s business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception, he was faithful to the end.”

Literary device + Analysis The author is using symbolism in this quote in order to represent the American dream because it represents Gatsby's self-creation. It also represents the actions people will do in order to achieve their goals and dreams. The quote displays how Gatsby thinks of himself to be "the son of a god" which shows that Gatsby idolizes himself and sees himself as almost being as perfect. This also represents the American dream because people will often try to motivate themselves and see themselves as better when they are trying to achieve a certain goal

I chose Gatsby because his character is a very mysterious character very little is known about many aspects of his life such as his past life, wealth, personality, and how he has become the person he is currently. I also chose Gatsby because although very little is known about him we do know that Gatsby is a very ambitious person especially when it comes to himself and his wealth we also do know that he is almost stuck in the past trying to win Daisy back and is still deeply in love with her.

I think that this song represents Gatsby well as he is very ambitious when it comes to his wealth and money

Song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPLeuBXoPXI

Tony Zamora | Period 5 English

Quote: “He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life.” (Fitzgerald, 1. 56).

Literary device + Analysis:

This carefully constructed persona of Gatsby is further emphasized with the metaphor “He smiled understandingly - much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life .” (Fitzgerald, 1. 56). The metaphor conveys Gatsby’s enigmatic nature and indicates that he is not letting anyone too close. His role as the font of hope to all his party attendees is furthered accentuated with his eagerness to deliver what was promised and his goal to be the best host.

Gatsby is an interesting character due to the depth of his complexity. As is demonstrated in Chapter 1 with his parties, Gatsby is a man shrouded in mysteriousness who is willing to go to great lengths to achieve his goals. For example, during a conversation with Nick, Gatsby states he is an “Oxford man” (Chapter 1). It is later revealed that Gatsby actually was not an Oxford man, but Gatsby discussed that he was as a way to attract Daisy's attention. This act of deception is intriguing and reveals the lengths to which Gatsby will go to get what he wants. A song that reflects the mood of Gatsby is 'A Thousand Years' by Christina Perri. The soft piano, vocals and slow lyrics exemplify Gatsby's love for Daisy, whilst the strings further emphasize his complex yet optimistic emotions. The song itself speaks to Gatsby's resilience—not giving up his dream of achieving the love which he desires.

A Thousand Years' by Christina Perri. https://youtu.be/NZGHXy1IAHM?si=y4DU36dFEXddV4MP

The author made this quote for Daisy since she wants her daughter to grow up and be successful just like her so she wouldn’t have to worry financially. Even though everyone should grow up and find true love, she cares for her future and generations to come. To top it off, this world has evolved to be cruel and selfish that some people quote that they will never find true love. Daisy is just looking out for her daughter and found Tom to provide and care for her through his riches he possessed from his parents. He will never have to work hard for money since his parents already had everything planned out for him. Daisy saw this and knew she will never have to worry.

Daisy prefers materialism so I think she represents Gold Digger by Kayne West:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p5yJgu38D24&pp=ygUWZ29sZCBkaWdnZXIga2FueWUgd2VzdA%3D%3D

However, this quote draws attention to the fact that people are not attracted to Gatsby himself, they are attracted to the lavish parties he throws as well as the attention they may receive from attending these parties. This signifies that no one truly knows the type of person Gatsby is, nor do they care.

I chose to write about Gatsby because of the emotion that Daisy expressed after reading the letter she received from Gatsby the day of her wedding. Daisy's reaction makes me curious as to what Gatsby could have said to make her react the way she did. Leading me to believe that there may be a sensitive side to Gatsby's complex character that he does not express. It also intrigues me that hundreds of people simply come to Gatsby's parties without truly knowing him. The fact that "men and girls came and went like moths," proves that people in society use people like Gatsby only to their benefit. Yet, Gatsby does not express how these actions make him feel.

Music I think connects to Jay Gatsby:

Satisfied - Hamilton

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InupuylYdcY

Joshua Martinez P.5

"It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced or seem to face the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrate on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor."

The author is using the literary devices imagery + style in this scene to paint a picture of Gatsby inviting smile. Fitzgerald writing style really makes the scene come to life, making it seem like your watching Gatsby give you a reassuring smile.

I find Gatsby mysterious yet charming personality very interesting. He can pull you in with the way he talks. Fitzgerald use of style really makes Gatsby feel real and not like he's from a book. Gatsby's mystery of how he became so rich is a real anchor that hold me in interest of him. He sounds like a character that would be fun to talk with and have many interesting things to say.

Song: Save my soul by Big bad voodoo daddy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6RzABcEwp8&pp=ygUhc2F2ZSBteSBzb3VsIGJpZyBiYWQgdm9vZG9vIGRhZGR5

Liana Sorrell | Period 5 English

Quote: " 'They're such beautiful shirts,' she sobbed, her voice muffled in thick folds. 'It makes me sad because I've never seen such-such beautiful shirts before."

Literary Device + Analysis: The author uses symbolism to show how the shirts represent something Daisy could have once had. And what her life may have been like had she chosen Gatsby long ago. It also may symbolize Daisy being proud of Gatsby for coming so far. Her tears stem from her longing to know who Gatsby has become and what life would have been like for the both of them if they had stayed together.

I chose to write about Daisy and through her perspective because I think she is a very interesting character. Throughout the book we have already been learning more about her and finding out that she is a much deeper character than to what meets the eye. I feel like she is also somewhat misunderstood, and it may be easy to judge her at first. It seems like she may be confused in her decisions pertaining to life just as much as everyone around her is.

Song: I Wish You Roses by Kali Uchis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y7zc0eO26k

The shirts were something that Gatsby wanted to show Daisy to win her over. This quote is important to the text because it shows how much Gatsby wants Daisy. He demonstrates how much he loves Daisy and what he'd do for her.

Song: It Will Rain by Bruno Mars

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noSGpDLIMmI

Quote: ""They're such beautiful shirts," She sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. "It makes me sad because I've never seen such-such beautiful shirts before."

Literary Device + Analysis:The author is using symbolism by showing Gatsby's luxury and his attempt to bring Daisy back into his life through his expensive rack of stylish shirts. Although Daisy is from Gatsby's past he is desperate to bring her back which reveals a lot considering he has a very mysterious past. In this scene when he says this Daisy has a very intense reaction showing the spark of their connection in the past showing his progress and maybe she might get back with Gatsby even with her relationship with Tom B.

I'm also interested in the rest of Gatsby's mysterious past with everything we know about him so far making him a complex character. This makes me wonder what he will write in his letter. Using what we know so far I can predict he will write about his love of Daisy and how he is stuck in the past with her. I believe since Nick is Daisy's cousin Gatsby is trying to connect back to Daisy through Nick.

Music I think relates to Gatsby: Shiny-King Crab-Moana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuObpUUOdlo

And I hope she'll be a fool - that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful."

Literary device + Analysis:

The author is using point of view with this quote to show how Daisy views being beautiful is an easy way to live as a female. Daisy's point of view for females is if you are beautiful you will be successful.

I chose Daisy because the way she lives her life is interesting. She uses advantages to live through her life.
