I have a study guide I give the students the week before and this year at the end of each class when it gets close to the test, I am going to ask two questions for review and keep doing that, so it may help on them knowing the information, not just remembering it. I have used kahoot and will try quizzlet this year.

When students create their own questions based on their materials, I think this is really powerful for studying. These questions can be put into a program like quizziz or just put onto flash cards. Another powerful tool is to have students rewrite their notes so that they make sense to them. They could hand write them, add pictures, put them into a program such as PowerPoint, etc. and add pictures or even sound. Students need to have notes that make sense to them.

Everyone is different and I try to avoid mandating any one study style. Making Quizlet games, re-writing notes, finding review games, making games, etc. are all great strategies, BUT there is no substitution for TIME. So many of our lovely cherubs like to subscribe to the "It's not a problem until I look at it... so if I don't look at it, it most certainly is NOT a problem."
No matter what style students use, there is no greater ally than to begin practicing, now.

Because English is such a skill based content rather than content based, I encourage the students to teach someone else the content as they are studying. This forces the students to think about the process of answering a question and not just on a previous example. The strategy is very similar to writing out the work for a math problem.

Most recently my class used the concrete examples technique to learn the eight different phase changes of matter for a quiz. They had to research and design a presentation with picture examples of objects going through the phase changes. Then they shared their examples with other students at their table. I overheard students complementing and correcting each other on their phase changes.

C Miller
I explain "how to study" (particularly for our FF Quizzes) every year (more than once!). So many of them study by staring at the page that has both the question and the answer on it as mentioned in the article. I challenge them to go back through and answer each question without looking at notes or answer pages. That way they find out what they really DO know and what needs more practice.
