Patients have a discussion, speaking to an empty chair about their problems. They then switch to the empty chair and answer to the things they said in the first chair.

Patients constructively learn to assimilate and reject new ideas from experiences from changing surroundings.

Top Dog:
Factors which the individual has desire to meet because of social norms and standards

Underdog:
Excuses for demands should not be met

Gender goals of therapy:
Resolve unconscious conflicts by bringing them up to 'now' and developing new insights.
-------
The therapy is based on the 'humanistic' approach which means patients focus on present emotions and behavior / pay attention to desires.

Strength:
- Greater ability to tolerate negative emotions rather than hide them

Limitation:
- Needs specific training, has unclear methods.
- Patients could feel awkward

Reality therapy is a client-centered form of cognitive behavioral psychotherapy that focuses on improving present relationships and circumstances, while avoiding discussion of past events. This focuses on the fact that love is a human's most important basic need.

The goals of this Reality Therapy is to enhance coping skills, improving relationships, and promoting decision making.

In the therapy session, you take these steps towards the client.:

1. Help define the client's want.
2. Examine the total behavior of the client in order to know what to improve specifically.
3. Prompt the client to engage in self evaluation so they themselves understand their own issues.
4. Make specific and attainable plans for the future for improvement post-therapy sessions.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)

The goal of REBT is challenging and questioning our irrational and dysfunctional beliefs and replacing them with more sensible and functional beliefs. The result is not just changes in a few thought patterns or reducing some problematic symptoms, but a new perspective on life.

Focuses on resolving emotional and behavioral problems and disturbances and enabling people to lead happier and more fulfilling lives
Techniques:
Rational Emotive Imagery: REI can prepare you to deal with situations you would rather avoid because of anxiety. The steps, showing an illustrative example, are as follows:
o Imagine, vividly and clearly, the event or situation with which you have trouble.
o Allow yourself to feel - strongly - the self-defeating emotion which follows.
o Note the thoughts creating that emotion.
o Force the emotion to change to a more functional (but realistic) feeling. It is possible to do this, even though briefly.
o Note the thoughts you used to change the emotion.
Shame Attacking Exercises:
With these shame and discomfort attacking exercises the idea is to say and do what you want as long as it does not hurt anyone, is not illegal, and is not against your long term personal goals. It is important to note that when you do a shame and discomfort attacking exercise you may inconvenience someone else. That is fine. Often in life inconvenience is the price you or someone else pays when we are dealing with each other. Accept this reality. It often comes down to who is inconvenienced.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- REBT has a substantial and strong research base to verify and support both it's psycho-therapeutic efficiency and it's theoretical underpinnings.
- The clinical research on REBT has been criticized both from within and by others. For instance, originator Albert Ellis has on occasions emphasized the difficulty and complexity of measuring psycho-therapeutic effectiveness, because many studies only tend to measure whether clients merely feel better after therapy instead of them getting better and staying better.
