This is a reminder that your Identities seminars next week (Mon 20th and Tues 2st October) will be taking place at Glenside Hospital Psychiatric Museum, at UWE's Glenside campus in Stapleton; where, through an interactive workshop run by the museum’s curators, you will gain insight into how 19th & 20th Century Asylum lives were experienced (including leucotomies, strait jackets and Electro Convulsive Therapy). The Museum curator, Stella, will give you a tour, discuss the evolution of mental health care and our understanding of how to maintain well-being with you, and facilitate some fun workshop activities. The workshops will complement your upcoming lectures on mental health. 

The seminar/ workshop slots will fall within your usual seminar times, but, we have created overflow slots at other times, because the Museum is small and we don't want you to be too cramped, and to help with logistics of moving between campuses. To get there you can walk (in about 35 minutes) or cycle there quite quickly along the cycle path through Stoke Park, or you can catch a bus. To get there by bus: 

• 48A bus from Frenchay Campus – run approx. every 10 mins and takes about 15 – 20 mins to get there (allow extra time if your seminar is at 9am)

• The No. 16 bus from the centre of town also stops near the Museum. For more information, visit Traveline.

While historically significant, please be warned the above article is a quite disturbing example of how Aversive Therapy (a form of behavioural conditioning) was applied historically. 

In this British Medical Journal published article in 1962, Dr Basil James reports on his 'success’ in "curing" a patient of his homosexuality with Aversive Therapy at Glenside; he concludes:   "Although the period of follow-up is comparatively short, the patient's heterosexual attraction is increasing with time rather than decreasing, and it would be easy to give a "booster" course of treatment should he show signs of relapse (p.770)."  

In a second follow-up article in the Nursing Times in 1963, Basil James updates the medical community of the longevity of his results; where he concludes: “It is our impression that this patient remains a sexually normal person, and that his general social adjustment is probably better than at any previous time (p.538).”
