When my husband and I married over 21 years ago, we created this union of our family crests (mon in Japanese) made of 1001 mini origami cranes. Japanese tradition is that the bride folds them to develop her patience and persistence. However, my fine motor skills are poor and my patience w/crafts low, so my husband folded the 1000 gold ones and I folded the red one. For me the red one represents my Chinese side along w/my Chinese family name. This is hung near our front door so we return or exit reminded of our respective cultural heritage and the perserverance and patience needed to maintain our happy union.

This hymnal represents my family's connection to church music, our church community, and tradition, but also represents an effort to reconcile with the harmful parts of that tradition. I was raised in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) in the Sierra Pacific Synod. This hymnal attempted to update some of the cultural and gendered language that existed in previous hymnals. Last year our Synod elected the first openly transgender Bishop in history (that I know of!) and I am incredibly proud of the work we have done!

Cultural Bridges

This was given to me by one of several foreign exchange students I hosted in the 80's and 90's. She is only 10 years younger than I am, and she is closer to me than my sister. This was her attempt at teaching me to read Japanese. She pointed out that I do not need to speak Japanese to be able to read the traditional script. I thought this was such a symbol of a mindset of building cultural bridges - which she embodies to me. Many years later, we had an opportunity to travel together internationally and we still keep in touch. No matter how much time passes between visits, she always remains my sister.

Heriberto's Frida

When the stay at home order began in California I began to explore my artistic ability. I sketched Frida, and she stayed intact until everything that transpired after the murder of George Floyd. Being immunocompromised, I could not go out and protest and had so many emotions inside of me; I took to art to express them. Little by little Frida's headdress became colorful representing the LGBT community, her lips were erased and a mask was added to represent the pandemic, the mask took BLM acronym. This painting represents the intersections of allyship, solidarity and culture.
