There is evidence of this because their buildings and structures were well preserved. The jungle had overgrown the buildings once the Mayans abandonded them.

Nobles served as rulers and goverment officials. Serfs worked on the lands that belonged to the rulers. Slavery was a form of punishment or given to prisoners of war.

Commoners houses were made of organic, degradable materials, so no ancient ones exist today. Nobles lived in the big stone houses that you can still see today.
