And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.” (Chbosky 11). While he has friends and is living his best life, he still wants to find the better understanding of things and feels that things feel unfinished or unsatisfying in his life, as if somethings missing

Charlie has a hard time being social and communicating with others. ""He's a wallflower...You see things. You keep quiet about them. And you understand." (Chbosky 95). This quote helps illustrate how charlie has a hard time interacting with people and would rather observe people and try to understand him. His friend points out that even though he is not interacting he still understands and is still valuable to his friends

Because charlie is so kept to himself people find him to be anti social and often ignore him and who he could be. "Charlie. Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not trying to make you feel uncomfortable. I just want you to know that you're special...and the only reason I'm telling you is that I don't know if anyone else ever has." (Chbosky 425). This quote helps us see that because people often don't take the time to try and get to know or understand people but charlie takes in everything and thinks about things making him different. People really don't see that and when they do they realize how special charlie really is.

But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them." (Chbosky 497). Charlie is coming to terms with the hardships he faced in the past that caused him to always try to find the hidden meaning and always try to understand to world around him. He finally lets go and realize it's in the past and can't affect his future if he doesn't let it which is a big moment of character development in the book.

The word "infinite" is an example of diction that the author uses in the book a few different times. This word has a lot of meaning to it as it represents Charlie and the trails he faced as a kid. When the author uses this word it helps show us that as Charlie is making new friends and partying he feels that he finally can live again and that his life was everything he could want it to be in that moment, causing it to feel "infinite".

"... Sam stood up, and the wind turned her dress into ocean waves." (Chbosky 38). This is a metaphor Chbosky uses to show us that Charlie likes Sam. In the quote Charlie says when Sam stands that her dressed move like the ocean waves, the oceans waves being something of beauty. Which relates to his feelings for Sam and how things as simple as standing up capture her beauty.

" I love you." (Chbosky 69). While this might not seem like figurative language and something that everyone says, it is a big deal that Charlie was able to say this to Sam. This is another use of diction that the author puts in to show how Charlie is feeling. Charlie has a really hard time connecting with people so the fact that Charlie says I love you to Sam really shows how much he cares for her and actually feels a connection with someone which he hasn't since he was a kid.

"And my mind played hopscotch." (Chbosky 98). The author uses this metaphor to show us that Charlie was unsure of his decision which is very rare because he always is trying to think things out and understand things. Also, his mind is not actually playing hopscotch he is just saying how he was confused and unsure of his decision.

Before Charlie went to high school he only had one friend. His only friend ended up committing suicide and leaving Charlie with no one. "Well, I think that Michael was a nice guy and I don't understand why he did it. As much as I feel sad, I think that not knowing is what really bothers me" (Chbosky 4). This ends up being a long term conflict for Charlie because due to his friends suicide he started keeping to himself because he felt so alone and helpless. Charlie also didn't understand why his friend did it and so Charlie tries to understand other things in the world to make up for it, which is another reason why hes so quite.

He meets two siblings, Sam and Patrick. They are both seniors and through out the book Charlie is mentored by them and soon becomes a part of their friend group. Charlie slowly starts to fall in love with Sam but she is a senior and it wouldn't work out because Charlie is a freshman. "I love you." (Chbosky 69). This quote clearly shows that Charlie is in love with Sam. This causes conflict later on as it affects his other relationships as he is still in love with Sam

He was alone and was just existing until he met Sam and Patrick. They showed him true friendship and helped him come out of his shell. This story is based on the friendships he forms with them and how their friendship changed him and helped him become who he did at the end of the book.

“I am very interested and fascinated how everyone loves each other, but no one really likes each other.” The authors tone in this shows how the words "love" and "like" are used so often. The word love is used very often and is often throw around without using the true meaning of it. So by him saying people often love each other but not like each other is like saying people get connected very easily or quickly and don't take the steps to get there, almost like it's fake.

"My dad is not a big drinker at all, but when he has to spend time with my mom's family, he gets 'loaded'..." (Chbosky, 57) This is a good example of tone and diction the author uses to show that his dad doesn't like his mothers family and has to be drunk to be around them happily
