My person is Mae Jemison. She was born on October 17th, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama. She was inspired by an African American actress named Nichelle Nichols.

She graduated from Morgan Park Highschool in Chicago in 1973. In September of 1992, she became the first african-american woman in space as a mission specialist on space shuttle endeavour (STS-47). In 2012, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. In 2019, she contributed to the book “The Chemistry of Soils” as part of the “RSC Paperbacks” series.

Setbacks and How She Overcame Them

She had a big fear of heights. She overcame this fear from the drive to push through and complete her training. This is pretty much the only major setback in her career.
