PD 4: LitLife Literary Tea Reflections by Suzette Henry

Include your name on your post. Briefly reflect on the LITLIFE experience. What are 1-2 takeaways? We know time and technology are concerns, so if you had one more week to work on this experience, what would you add? If we were meeting in person? What might you modify?

The rooms felt somewhat immersive since classmates tried their best to imitate Victorian style things in their background. Overall, I think we were able to discuss the play a little before games, but I would definitely have more topics on hand if we had another week to work on this. If we were meeting in person, I might bring in food, though we wouldn't have been able to do that anyways in this current pandemic.

Seeing people on camera is always nice! The games were really fun as well. I wasn't sure when it was time to play games or discuss the text, and whether or not to always be in character, so I think some additional structure would be beneficial.

I really enjoyed this experience! It was really fun to play games with each other and take on the persona of someone from another era, as well as having good discussion. My group had and interesting discussion regarding how Mr. Wilde's play might have been received by different social groups during the Victorian Era.

I found this LITLIFE experience to be pretty interesting as it was a challenge to follow Victorian Era speech and etiquette when discussing how the title of the play was ironic. I thought it was interesting how the party crashers also interacted, and how though they may have different cultural backgrounds, ideals were similar sometimes. If I had another week I would see if there was more depth and immersion we could have added and planned out the party crasher profiles more. If it was in person, we would have changed our food and game choices a bit, but I think the discussion would have been about the same

It was fun once people got used to the format and started talking more! If I had another week I'd probably pre-plan some more content with the party crashers to make it funnier. Obviously this would be more immersive in person, but having cameras on was really nice because we got to see everyone's faces even online. Being in person also would've been nice because we could dress in full attire, but overall this experience was very well-adapted to the online setting. It was also interesting to "make fun of" the play because it gave us a more in-depth understanding while still being pretty entertaining trying to follow Victorian customs.

I enjoyed researching different Victorian customs, mannerisms, and games and found The Importance of Being Earnest to be quite humorous. It was also interesting to act as a member of a high-class Victorian tea party and to discuss matters of Victorian society such as morality. If I had another week to work on this project, I would have planned a Victorian debate between members of my group to represent the issues of the time period. Although my group was still able to pull of a fun activity, meeting in-person would have allowed us to create a more engaging and unique activity with physical objects and locations.

I enjoyed the tea party, although I had far to much tea and sandwiches. I think most people did well, although there were fewer people trying to have an English accent than I would have liked. Additionally, when there was a group of 6 or more with several people talking their faces would spin around the screen and make it hard to talk. If we had more time, I would perhaps streamline the playing of draughts, and if we were in person I would have to make more tea sandwiches.

I enjoyed all of the different activities that people had offered, and it was fun pretending to be someone from a different era. If I had an extra week, I would have planned a more thorough personality, and if we were meeting in person, it would have been interesting to do some games that would have worked better in-person, like ones involving people leaving a room and whatnot. If it was in-person, I also think that the experience would have felt more authentic, especially since there would be no awkward moments because of technology. One major takeaway is that there are a lot of aspects involved in acting like a person from another era, whether it be in terms of the way people speak or the way we sit.

I thought that this was an interesting and new way to discuss what we read compared to what we are used to in breakout rooms. One takeaway I got was that Wilde incorporated humor and satire all throughout the play. If I had one more week to prepare, I would've researched more about Victorian etiquette because I didn't really incorporate much of it into my breakout groups.

This experience was a bit interesting to do - but definitely restrained by time and the virtual landscape that we had. 2 Takeaways I had were that a) allowing people to discuss plays from a perspective of a character outside the play (i.e. the "crasher"), makes for some insightful discussions. and b) many things have stayed the same throughout life (especially in the "formal" attire people choose to wear from different centuries). If I had one more week to prepare, I probably would have dressed my room up more. And if I was in-person, definitely would have changed my attire slightly. In the future, I may use an organized system to allow people to move so people are always meeting fresh people.

The various games we played helped me learn about the victorian era. I played draughts in one group, which is simply a victorian era checkers. In another group I was referred to as "Lady Rhea", which set the vibe and immerse myself into the victorian era theme. It was interesting to hear what the crashers had to say, when they came from a different era. However, some of the crashers (Sophia) I didn't actually know beause I hadn't read the book before.

The use of party crashers from vastly different settings helped contrast the characters and personalities of those in the Victorian-era which helped me gain a better understanding of the etiquette, customs, and beliefs of Victorian-era people. If I had one more week to work on this experience I would've tried to do more in turns of costumes and decor.

I enjoyed playing a few different types of Victorian era games and discussing the play through the perspective of someone in high society. If I had another week to prepare, I might have worked on a specific persona and gotten more into character or planned more activities with my group (more structured). Meeting in-person would definitely have made the experience better, as we could enjoy treats together while playing games face-to-face and have, perhaps, fewer awkward moments. It definitely would've been more interesting in person (I couldn't participate fully because I had no webcam). But being over BBCU also added an interesting aspect to it because it was somewhat awkward and probably reflected how social gatherings were as a result of how superficial all the conversations were. If I had one more week to work on this experience I would've been more prepared as I had run out of content to share by round 3/4.

I really enjoyed this project because I learned a lot more about Victorian customs, games, and etiquette that I haven't knew beforehand. It was also great to approach groupthink in a unique way through introductions, Victorian food, and Victorian games while having meaningful discussion on the play. If I had more time to work on this experience, I would definitely incorporate more Victorian games, beyond chess and checkers, into the activity. If we were to be meeting in person, I would definitely be in a better position to share some Victorian food and drinks with my peers and have more choices of Victorian games and activities to create and do.

I really enjoyed this experience! It was really fun to play games with each other and take on the persona of someone from another era, as well as having good discussion. My group had and interesting discussion regarding how Mr. Wilde's play might have been received by different social groups during the Victorian Era, with a focus on how the satire might have been interpreted. With an extra week, I'd have liked to have spent more time creating a character for myself - someone with
