MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) standards are designed to represent bibliographic and related information in a structured format that computers can read and process. The record structure is divided into three major components:

1. Leader

• Length: Fixed at 24 characters.

• Purpose: Contains coded data about the record type, bibliographic level, encoding, and processing instructions.

• Example elements: Record length, record status, type of record, base address of data.

2. Directory

• Purpose: Lists the location of each field in the record.

• Format: Each directory entry is 12 characters long (3 for tag, 4 for field length, 5 for starting position).

• Function: Helps the system find and interpret each data field quickly.

3. Variable Fields

These contain the actual bibliographic information, divided into two types:

a. Control Fields (00X)

• Contain fixed-length or coded information (e.g., 001 for control number, 008 for fixed-length data elements).

• No indicators or subfields.

b. Data Fields (010–999)

• Each has three elements:

  • Tag – Three-digit code (e.g., 245 for title statement).

  • Indicators – Two single-character codes modifying interpretation.

  • Subfields – Units of information within a field, each preceded by a delimiter and a subfield code (e.g., $a, $b).

Tag Groupings

• 0XX – Control and standard numbers (e.g., ISBN).

• 1XX – Main entry (author).

• 2XX – Titles and editions.

• 3XX – Physical description.

• 4XX – Series statements.

• 5XX – Notes.

• 6XX – Subjects.

• 7XX – Added entries (contributors).

• 8XX – Series added entries.

• 9XX – Local library use.

Dublin Core is organized into 15 basic elements known as Simple Dublin Core:

1. Title – Name given to the resource

2. Creator – Person or organization responsible for creation

3. Subject – Topic(s) or keywords

4. Description – Summary or abstract of the content

5. Publisher – Entity responsible for making the resource available

6. Contributor – Other individuals or entities that contributed

7. Date – Date of creation, publication, or availability

8. Type – Nature or genre (e.g., text, image, video)

9. Format – File format or physical medium

10. Identifier – Unique reference (e.g., URL, ISBN)

11. Source – A related resource from which the item is derived

12. Language – Language of the resource (e.g., “en” for English)

13. Relation – A related resource (e.g., version, series)

14. Coverage – Spatial or temporal scope (e.g., place, period)

15. Rights – Information about usage rights
