Mama is a very optimistic person. For example, she bought a house for her family, wanted them to have a better life but the neighborhood she bought it in is a bad spot for them. It was an all-white neighborhood. During this time period whites and blacks didn't live in the same neighborhoods. Yet she tries to make the best out of the situation.

Lena states, “Ever since I was a little girl I always remembers people saying, ‘Lena Eggleston, you aims too high all the time.’ ” Regardless of what others said she was able to buy a house for her family. Her perseverance takes her to a whole new level than anyone would have thought she would. She even has money to spare to give to her son, even though this may not seem like a big feat to some people, it means a lot to her. She came from nothing and now has something in which she can call her own. This quote is a great representation of how doubt is used as motivation as well.

I think mama is a good mom and tries to make life for her family better in the dark times Africans were going through. She's honest, moral and maternal. She puts her family's happiness above all and does anything for them. I think overall Lena is a good mother because she used her husbands insurance money to buy a bigger and better house for her family. She also gave Walter money for invest in a liquor store venture.

It Couldn’t Be Done by Edgar Albert Guest is a great representation of Lena. Lena does think from time to time that she can not achieve her goals but in the end she does. Someone said that it couldn’t be done, but she persisted. She tackled what she wanted just as the man does in this poem.
Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

And if I can last thirty rounds
There's no reason you should ever have your head down
Six foot five, two hundred and twenty pounds
Hailing from rock bottom, Loserville, nothing town
Textbook version of the kid going nowhere fast
And now I'm yelling kiss my a**
It's gonna take a couple right hooks, a few left jabs
For you to recognize that you really ain't got it bad
Until the referee rings the bell
Until both your eyes start to swell
Until the crowd goes home
What we gonna do y'all?

I think a song that represents Lena very well is The Fighter by Gym Class Heroes. This song describes a man who comes up from nothing do defeat the odds against him. They explain his journey through in a symbolic way by using a a boxing match as his life. The person portrayed in the song is very similar to Lena because he is fighting for something. Lena is fighting for a better life for her family.

The biggest theme in The Raisin in the Sun is race. The female race is present throughout the whole play given that the Younger's are living in a white neighborhood. It is harder, for African Americans in this time period, to buy a house than it is for whites . In the book, we see the Youngers being singled out for their race, The theme for the Raisin in the Sun is built upon racism In the book we see inequality as well as prejudice. Lena states, " Them houses they put up for colored in them areas way out seem to cost twice as much as other houses. I did the best i could" .
