In Education for Life and Work it is suggested that there is further research done on if and how much teacher for transfer within an academic discipline can help with transfer across disciplines. As an elementary school teacher I see this as incredibly valuable research. If we can start to prep our students in developing skills that will transfer both between subject areas and out of the classroom they will be that much more prepared for high school and beyond.

One thing that was a bit of an ah ha moment for me was when in How Learning Works it talks about how activating background knowledge can be a bad thing sometimes. THis is such a important teaching strategy in schools. If we can activate their background knowledge they will be able to relate better to the content and hopefully be able to retain more of the information presented. I never thought about how that knowledge could be incomplete or incorrect and how that can actually do more harm than good when teaching. So note to self: always verify accurate background knowledge
when using this strategy.

Teaching for Transfer

Both texts talked about teaching for transfer. In Education for Life and Work it was concluded that teaching for transfer is meant to increase transfer within a discipline. It suggests researching how that transfer can correlate across disciplines as well. How Learning Works points out that transfer is one of the paint goals of teaching, but yet it is relatively unsuccessful. It goes on to give strategies that help with "robust learning" such as using compare and contrasts and minor teacher prompts

Student motivation was a theme that was present in both of the documents. In How Learning Works, motivation was put in the terms of how it "influences the directions, intensity, persistence and quality of the learning behaviors in which the students engage". Education for Life and work points out that "motivation helps learners to mentally organize and integrate information in the cognitive processing that is central to deeper learning". These 2 ideas about motivation go hand in had with each other in my opinion.
