That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou see'st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west;
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death's second self, that seals all up in rest.
In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the deathbed whereon it must expire,
Consumed with that which it was nourished by.
This thou perceiv'st, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

In the first two lines of the poem I imagine a beautiful autumn morning with many different colored trees shining as the sun peaks through. The following two lines make me think of a crisp breeze gently blowing the leaves off the trees and onto the ground. I imagine birds sitting on the power lines and trees as they whistle their song. The sun is setting slowly on the horizon as the light fades and the stars and moon begin to appear. Before you know it, it is completely dark, until a fire begins to glow in the midst of the darkness. As the fire crackles, the ashes spread, the fire dims and soon comes to an end.

Memories

1.) The beginning of the poem described the autumn trees with leaves falling. This reminded me of a memory that I had when I was younger. I would climb in our "fun tree" out front with my brothers. Fall was the perfect season to explore outside and climb in the trees as we played imaginary games.

2.) The middle part of the poem reminded me of a fun memory I have with my friends. Once again it was a cool autumn evening and we all piled onto the backyard patio next to the bonfire. We sang songs together, laughed, and roasted smores. It was such a fun evening together as we sat by the warm, crackling fire.

3.) The imagery of the birds singing reminded me of a trip to Colorado. I went on this trip with several of my friends. We went hiking, white water rafting, and did other outdoor activities. We set up our hammocks at twilight and went to bed for the night. When the sun started to rise, I remember waking up to the sound of birds chirping. This is such a vivid memory I have of the cold air on my face, the sunshine in my eyes, and the beautiful choir of birds waking me up.

When reading this poem, I see the speaker as someone who is sentimental and reflective. The speaker sounds like someone who is well educated and has completed several years of schooling just by the way he speaks. The background of the speaker is one who sees love as something very important all throughout his life.

Love is something that everyone thinks about at some point. If you don't have someone or something to love or be loved by, your life is meaningless. It does not necessarily have to be a person, but love drives the decisions we make in all areas of life. To me personally this poem reminds me of how I hold on to memories and the sentimental value of things.
