Both Catherine Earnshaw Linton and Cathy Linton are demanding and headstrong individuals. Since Cathy is born the day her mother dies, it's hard not to see her as an extension of Catherine Earnshaw. But Heathcliff doesn't seem to see Cathy that way, and Brontë does not suggest a direct parallel.

Chapter 18

"...a real beauty in the face, with the Earnshaw's handsome dark eyes..."

"The capacity for intense attachments reminded me of her mother..."

Cathy Linton is a kinder, gentler version of her mother, thanks in part to her relationship with Edgar, an extremely dedicated father. Though she can be snobbish, Cathy's generosity and kindness toward Hareton – not to mention her love of the simpering Linton Heathcliff – demonstrate a kind of compassion and selflessness that her mother never had.

Chapter 18

"...she could be soft and mild as a dove..."

"...her anger was never furious, her love never fierce: it was deep and tender."

"...still he did not resemble her (Catherine Earshaw)"

Themes Linking the Characters

Love
Catherine and young Catherine are both remarkably similar and strikingly different. They seem to repeat each others actions within the book and have the same manipulative attitudes to the ones they love. Catherine and heathcliff's relationship seemed to be ultimately self-centered and ignore the needs, feelings, and claims of others; what matters is the lovers' own feelings and needs. This is then reflected in Cathy's and Hareton's relationship which shares the same passion and attraction as their elders but again ignores the feelings and the effects it has on others.

Violence
Both Catherine and the’ Young’ Catherine seem to be victims of violence throughout the novel. We first see this in chapter 6 when Catherine is bitten by the Linton’s dog, Skulker, which leads to the separation of the her and Heathcliff and her staggering transformation from being a child who loved to play in the moors and didn’t care what she looked like, to a girl which has manners and that will grow up one day to be Lady Linton. Later on in the novel Heathcliff, in revenge, abducts Cathy and Nelly and keeps them imprisoned in Wuthering Heights. The violence then continues when Cathy is forced to marry Linton and, when Edgar dies, is made to move to wuthering heights and work for her keep. Cathy is treated badly by Heathcliff while at Wuthering Heights and has to look after Linton until he dies.

Revenge
This theme that runs throughout the novel effects Catherine Earnshaw and Catherine Linton heavily, it could however be said that the elder of the two is subject to the cruel acts of revenge less so than Cathy Linton is. Heathcliff wants revenge on Catherine Earnshaw and Edger Linton for marrying eachother and also possibly due to jealousy of their status and relationship, one way that he takes revenge on them is to marry Isabella. This act is more detremental to Isabella than Catherine Earnshaw however her and Edger are angered by it. Another way that revenge is seen in the two characters, Catherine Earnshaw and Catherine Linton is in Heathcliff's forcing of Cathy II to marry his son Linton. Once he dies Catherine is left very lonely at Wuthering Heights and is "ready to cry" at even the slightest remark. This could be blamed on Cathy I in the frist place as if she had not married Edger then her daughter may not have been subject to so much of Heathcliff's revengeful nature.

Catherine Earnshaw's Impact on Cathy Linton

Catherine Earnshaw has a huge impact on her daughter Cathy
Linton despite the fact that she dies the day she is born. Catherine Earnshaw’s
death results in a period in which Cathy’s father Edgar Linton becomes reserved
(a “hermit”) and dominated by his “sorrow”. He does not initially care for
Cathy Linton and leaves her care to women that work at Thrushcross Grange.
Cathy Linton is described as an “unwelcomed infant” and “friendless” due to the
emotional pain that Edgar Linton feels due to Catherine’s death.

In Chapter 18 Cathy Linton is described as being “the most
winning thing that ever brought sunshine into a desolate house”; she is adored
by her father, Edgar Linton (“I don’t believe he ever did speak a harsh word to
her”). Although this period of Cathy’s life appears positive, Edgar Linton is
overprotective of his daughter (“…but he trusted no one else”) due to the loss
of another loved one, Catherine. Thus, Cathy feels suffocated and yearns for freedom.
