This is a phrase she always said at every gathering we had, whether during events in the Assembly Hall or even during our Christmas carol performances. At the time, I never understood it, and, to be honest, I didn’t give it much thought, as I was focused on my difficult education and balancing it with my choir practice, which was the highlight of my secondary school experience. I enjoyed her speeches, often mimicking how she pronounced her words and the rhythm of her delivery in the bathroom at night.

Now, I find myself in a phase where I am struggling with confusion and truly understanding who I am. I can't help but think, "Maybe if I had reflected more on her words earlier, things would have been smoother." As the saying goes, you don't realise the value of what you had until you lose it. Rest in peace, Mama. Your valuable words, which I once disregarded, have proven to be just as significant now as they were then.

I remember being a young 10-year-old in an oversized pinafore, watching Mama speak for the very first time. Already in her late 70s then, she stood so strong, commanding the room with a presence that left us all in awe. I kept thinking, "wow!"

From diction lessons to speech delivery and debates, Mama groomed me to stand tall, speak well, and hold my head high. Bad posture? Never. She instilled in us true Christian values and left us with the timeless words, “Who am I?”, words that continue to guide me and so many others long after our school days.

Even the smallest details, like how to pronounce “the” with “the tip of your tongue at the top of your mouth”, remain etched in my memory.

Mama was a fiery yet kind woman, a teacher yet a mother, and above all, an unforgettable legend. Her legacy is carried in every Vivian Fowler girl who walked through those gates, myself included.

May her soul rest in perfect peace and may her memory always be blessed.

Praise Oluwarinu.

Although my time at VFMC was over a decade ago and for only 3 years of my life, it’s a time and experience that will forever stick with me. I love telling people about my time there, and it’s something I think about almost daily.

Every time Mama was in our presence, I felt empowered. She had a way of reaching deep inside us and instilling values that will forever guide us in life. She taught us to think deeply about ourselves and who we are as individuals.

I also remember as a child feeling so special when I realized we shared the same birthday.

Mama, thank you for all the wisdom and knowledge you gave us. You will forever be missed, and most importantly, remembered.

Habeeba Amuni ❤️

As a legacy student at VFMC, I first heard about Mama’s influence and personality from my aunt, long before I ever met her.

When I eventually joined as a student, I experienced the impact of her presence in a room. Although we were from different generations, her confidence, dignity, and intelligence are traits I strongly believe every woman should embody. Seeing a woman of her time who was both well-spoken and outspoken was a treasure, and she encouraged us to do the same, and strive for even greater heights.

Looking back on my teenage years at school, I am deeply appreciative of the sheltering, the academic nudging, and her unwavering call to examine who I am. That challenge, especially, has stayed with me, for a life worth living must reflect one’s true self and values.

Mama was a remarkable woman who created an environment where greatness could be cultivated in younger generations of women. For that, her memory will always be missed.

Rest well, Mama🤍

-Angela Koshoni

Even though my time at Vivian Fowler was just a year, Mama’s presence left a lasting impression on me. She was firm, but it was never without reason — every correction and standard she set was rooted in teaching us discipline, self-respect, and values that would follow us into life well beyond the classroom. Her strength, wisdom, and unwavering belief in excellence shaped the culture of Vivian Fowler and the young women who passed through its gates.

Mama was more than an administrator; she was a guide who showed us that challenges build character and that true growth often comes from being pushed to rise above comfort. The lessons I carried from her have stayed with me, and I remain grateful to have experienced even a glimpse of her leadership and vision. May her legacy live on in the countless lives she molded.

Adeola Alugbin
