The hotel is on the mountains away from the town. Since it is winter, the roads are blocked and there is no service to get in contact with anyone. The Torrances are alone inside of their hotel, knowing that their isolation is dangerous. Because the hotel won´t be getting any any help due to winter, it intesifies the isolating effects. Jack is struggling with his alcoholism and Danny is having difficulty understanding how to ¨shine¨. This is damaging to both of them, which then makes them show signs of insanity.  Stephen King makes a point between both isolation and insanity.
