It is quite common for the youth to interact with others over social media. Facebook is the most common social media platform in which the youth interact with each other. Facebook gives youth the opportunity to voice their opinion on all sorts of topics. According to research by Dr. Larry D. Rosen, a psychology professor from California State University, "Facebook gives shy youth students a platform in which their ideas can be expressed." Along with this positive outcome of Facebook, there is also many negatives. Rosen discovered a link between Facebook and narcissism. Youth are looking for gratification from their peers pertaining to their "statuses" and ideas. Along with narcissism, Rosen observed the decline of grades from teens who check Facebook frequently.
The issue of Facebook within the youth is the amount of misinformation. There are several news articles that circulate Facebook which eventually leads to the you reading and belief of false information.
This issue presents the necessity for teachers to clarify misunderstandings. But clarifying misinformation is not the end of the role of the teacher. The teacher's responsibility is to teach how to interpret and find credible sources.
With technology on the rise, youth will be prone to all it offers, whether positive or negative. Technology can be the greatest resource in education, but some platforms such as Facebook will affect student learning. It is not only important for teachers to keep students aware of the negatives of Facebook and other social medias, it is also important for parents to limit the use of Facebook.
As shown through studies, Facebook can either hinder or promote youth learning, but there is a necessity for teachers to educate the youth on how to use and not use social media to promote literacy and education.
