The public service I have chosen is the British Army, I have chosen this public service because they are seen as the best force in the world with the best training. In this public service I have chosen a soldier for the role I will talk about. I chose a soldier because they are the heart and the brains, they work together and have certain qualities and skills that make them who they are and make them the one of the best land fighters in the world.

In the army life you need to be aware of the skills the armed forces will be looking for in all potential new recruits. Being a soldier in the army is no easy job and demands a lot from you, if you have the skills that I will be talking about, it makes the job so much easier.

The key skills you need in the army are:

Patriotism – You need to be ready to fight for your country. At any moment in time you will be called out on tour and you have to be ready to put everything else aside to be able to fight against the queen's enemies. You have to be able to give up your life so that others can live.

Teamwork/ co-operation – This is very important as teamwork is vital to the success of the army. At any moment whether it be in a battlefield, accommodation or in basic training you need to be able to rely on other for help and be able to help others. You need to be able to support, motivate each other even when you feel at your lowest. The army's saying is "this is belonging".

Leadership – Every organisation needs a leader, without one there would be chaos, The British Army have officers who are leaders but my role is on soldiers. The officers need NCOs who can control the squad of soldiers and effectively teach them the skills and training of being an efficeient soldier. To be a leader you need to be honest, organised, and set an example.

Communication skills – No matter what role you decide to do in the army or however long you've been in the arfmy, communication is the most important skill to have. You have to be able to give and reach orders clearly and without hesitation. For example if a CSM was to instruct the lower NCOs on the training programme, he would have to it clearly, thoroughly and make sure that they have understood it correctly so that they can pass on the information to their soldiers so that they are able to do the job they are supposed to do.

Quick-thinking and effective problem solver – Being in the army there are going to be plenty of problems and challenges that need to be overcame. to be able to be a quick thinker is important as you may need to do something that requires retricted time so you may not be able to ask for second opinion. for example if a MP was on duty and he/she saw a dispute about to kick off, that MP would suddenly have to think what to do and be able to take responsibility for their action.

Adaptable- being a soldier is tough work and conditions and circumstances may change with very short notice. it is important to be adaptable as you need to be able to perform your job in that certain condition without question. For example if a squad of soldiers have just been through their PT session and have now went on patrol and came under fire and suffered a casualty, they will need to be adapted from not just fighting but to helping the injured whist under fire. This is very stressful but needs to be a skill for any soldier to be able to save lives.

ICT skills- in any job you are in or hoping to get into, you need to have ICT skills, this useful becuase it's quicker than having to use notes or even pass information on by finding the person and saying what needs to be said. Computers are also good for keeping information down oon, for example if a soldier needs to find record how many rounds he fires in 2 weeks, it is better to record them everyday onto his computer to make sure he doesn't forget.

Qualities is what makes a person who they are, in the army you need to have certain qualities to be able to perform effectively.

They key qualities you need in the army is as follows:

honesty- Honesty is essential in the army. It gains you trust, respect and means you can tell people things that need to be said even though they may not like it. Honesty is one of the core values in the army, it is important that anyone applying for the army has the quality. soldiers don't want to work with someone who they cannot trust with their lives.

reliability- in the army you will have to rely on someone, sometimes you just cannot do things yourself and need some help. You want someone who will always come through, who will do what they say no matter what happens. this is a goodm quality to have in the army because you will be spending a lot of time with different sorts of people and you will have to be to get along bcause you are stuck with them, they are the ones who will look after yoou and vice versa.

punctuality- be punctual in the army is necessary as there are time restricted events that can happen so you need to be where you are supposed to be, on time if not early. For example if your NCO is about to deliver a lesson and everyone is in the class waiting for one person, this will either efffect the groupo or the individual. Leading to them not knowing what to do.

commitment- This is very important in the army. Especially because you have signed up for at least 4/5 years. You need to have commitment in every aspect of the army. whether it be commitment to getting up every morning, completing tough training or cleaning the accommodaton. If you have commitment it is so muich easier for others to trrust you as this quality really does show in people.

positive attitude to work- This can be known in the army as PMA, this stands for positive mental attitude. No matter where you are in your army career, if you are not positive or have a good mental attitude, it will show, you won't be interested in different situations, you won't want to leanr and won't want to progress through the army. The army looks for the quality of PMA as it's a good quality to have, this person can think on thr breight side of any problem and manage to turn it around. For example, a squad of soldiers have to complete 2 weeks of intense exercise operations, the positive person will be counting every day and thinking it's only a few more days till they come off exercise, they will think about how much they have learnt and raise other soldiers morale and inspire them to carry on. where as a negative person would only be thinking off getting exercise and stopping the course.

Concern for others- A quality like this is looked for in the army. It is wanted in all members of the armed forces, not just the army. Soldiers need to be caring and concerned for others, for example, in the battlefield whenever everything is too much for someone of just too tough they will break down and give up and potentially injury themselves or other. To have the quality of concern and care, it is important that they help that soldier out and make motivated to get up and inspire them to keep fighting. If no one had that skill, there would be even less people in the army and no one would look after each other.
