Q2: The FCC or Federal Communications Commission was established through the Communications Act of 1934. Its main goals are to issue broadcasting licenses, regulate content, and issue copyright protections. If I were in charge, I would put heavy regulations on children TV content, as to promote education and curiosity over distraction. Fostering curiosity in children is the only way to have hope for a better future, as I fully believe in education(or the pursuit of knowledge) over programs which aim to waste time, or worse, promote consumerism.
Q3: The term(interest) is too loose and means whatever you want it to mean. I think the statement is one of those classic political strategies to say stuff that means nothing. For example, what is in the best interest for an unhealthy person who is only happy eating mcdonalds everyday, is the best interest what you think they should do(eat healthier for their own sake), or keep doing what makes them happy. Depending on how you define interest the result is completely different.

In 1996 they in actes the telecommunications act in which would allow anyone to going in the communications Business in order to encourage competition in hopes to reduce prices but also increase quality.
Q2:The FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission. They are an Agency independent from the government. They regulate any from communication in order to have some control over what is streamed to the people using those services. If I worked for the FCC I probably wouldn't make it so television could be more affordable for the public. Also to make sure that educational shows are more engaging, and that any public news has to be reported as unbias.
Q3:The pbs network is probably what really fits the phrase "television serving the public interest". It mean making and producing media that will help better the public. Though we know pbs as a kids cartoon network, and documentary after 5pm. It really was made first for the public interest. It's were many kids learned new morals, or even how to spell. It helps educate many generations of kids from Mr. Roger, to author. It even had things for adults it's was what many of us needed.

Q1: The Communications Act of 1934 is an act to provide for the regulation of interstate and foreign communication by wire or radio, and for other purposes. The act established a legal basis for regulating wired and wireless communications on a nationwide and worldwide basis. The Federal Communication Commission was founded because of the act; it replaced the Federal Radio Commission. Because of the act, the U.S. government could regulate new media technologies such as television and mobile phones. With that, many of its critics have noted its potential in delaying the advancement of technology. This led to the Telecommunications Act of 1996: an Act that promotes competition and reduces regulation in order to secure lower prices and higher quality services for American telecommunications consumers and encourage the rapid development of new telecommunications technologies.

Q3: Television serving the public interest can mean a lot of things. You can bring up the art vs artifice argument or the utilitarian vs entertainment perspective. Me, I believe that television should provide quality shows that push the creators and viewers to their limits by not having a formula. Original, novelty, shows are those with the hardest working people behind them. The first show the pops of to mind is The Twilight Zone, with its prudent vision of writing and storytelling and use of effects to illustrate people in uncharacteristic situations. It's a show that gets people to think about their own lives, and how they define living and reason. Another show I want to bring up is Star Trek: The Original Series. A show that used the Sci-Fi medium to talk about real life topics of war, love, extraterrestrial communication, time travel, mass genocide, etc. Not only that, but the shown pushed the boundaries of where a show can take place and utilize its surroundings to convey a message. In short: shows that make people work hard, physically or mentally.

When considering television and its service to the public I would have to agree with the post war Murdock ideas that encourage being good at the core.
This would entail:
~Rational Argument
~Non-violent Resolution (my favorite)
~Welcoming of Difference
~Accepting of Dissent (dissent means: to hold or express opinions that are at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially expressed.
~Hearing Both Sides
~Consideration of the Public Good.

I do find comfort in this democratic view of television, it feels the least sneaky and manipulative.

I would say Planet Earth narrated by David Attenborough is a wonderful example of a show that does this.

Q2:
The FCC stands for the Federal Communications Commission, which was established through the Communications Act in 1934. The FCC was created to serve the public interest. This essentially means the programs made for the radio, television, satellite, internet, etc. in the United States are regulated/monitored by the FCC.
If I were the FCC commissioner, I would maybe attempt to focus on the content that is produced for younger children. Simply monitor that area if possible, without interfering too much with restrictions and whatnot. However, I believe I would mainly work to establish a greater emphasis on a more diverse representation of minorities within television/film.
Q3:
When the television is said to serve the public interest, in my opinion, it means that what is made and is shown on television is produced in order to create a sort of reaction from the audience. It could be content that is simply interesting/entertaining for the general public or could be content that is necessary/concerns information that the public should be aware of as well. Television tries to spark and serve the public interest in the ways that it is able to. Then there are those that are kind of a mix between the two of these. For more informational content, I would say documentaries such as History or Animal Planet. General entertainment is obviously a large almost unending spectrum, so there are many shows in that category. Though for an option that's almost a mix between the two, might be a show such as The Good Doctor.

Q1: The Telecommunications Act of 1996 was an overhaul of the Communications Act of 1934. This was meant to be rewriting the old communications act, and it was signed by the President of the United States, Bill Clinton. This was for the purpose of serving a major change in telecommunications, as it allowed for cross-ownership of media outlets by media conglomerates, which focused on five major areas. These areas that it focused on were Telephone Service, Telecommunications Equipment Manufacturing, Cable Television, Radio and Television Broadcasting, and The Internet and Online Computer Services.

The Communications Act of 1934 was a federal law signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which had federal regulations of telephone, telegraph, and radio communications combined, organized, and overseen. This was possible as the act created the FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, to act on these new regulations and responsibilities.

Q3: Television serving the public interest could be open for interpretation, however, it could mean that whatever is being shown on television, would be useful, educational, and beneficial for the viewer. It could also mean that it pushes creators to maybe not reuse the same story for television, but maybe switch it up, or have a viewer think more about what they just watched, with many different intriguing or confusing concepts. Another way to think of it serving the public interest is also by seeing reviews and switching what is broadcasted with better reviews. Overall, this term is very broad and could be used for many different scenarios, but overall, I believe it means that television should have the public interest benefit from what they watched on television.

This is a difficult question to answer because there is no absolute or objective way to serve the public. In addition, there are many ways that specific actions that may appear to be positive can have unforeseen harmful consequences. All of this being said, I would say that serving the public interest in some cases means promoting the well-being of individuals and doing this without malicious intent or any ulterior motives. I believe that a show that achieves this point in some ways includes “The New York Times Presents” which is a series of standalone documentaries that cover issues all over the world. This show consistently reports on inequities and injustices that are overlooked in main international news coverage and brings awareness to many important issues.

For example back when TV broadcasting began, day-time TV targeted female audience who stayed at home and cleaned the houses. These shows could range from soap-operas to romantic comedies. In recent years, shows like Modern Family are aimed towards families during the evening around dinner time.

Tv serving the public interest is aiding the population by giving them access to information or entertainment that benefits them and their personal well being. An example of this I feel would be documentarians on TV and news channels that provide critical information. Another example would be characters like Shirley Temple that were designed to be feel good characters during hard times for citizens.
Q2 The FCC is a group that curates and regulates the content that gets shared and broadcasted. If I were in charge I think an important thing to me would be to regulate that news stations would be reporting properly and not spreading hateful or harmful information or supporting the agendas of the companies that own them.

Q1:The FCC is the Federal Communications Commission established through the Communications Act of 1934. The FCC is an agency separate from the government that controls the communications line such as radios, satellites, wires, television, and cable across the US.

If I were the FCC commissioner, I would make sure that people were comfortable in watching television. Not in the sense where they are too comfortable, but comfortable enough to make sure that television is a separate and distressing activity from their regular life. Besides politics and other controversial topics, I would want to make a service where people are not constantly reminded about the tragedies and worries of the world, but enough to make them aware.

Q3:
Television serving the public interests seems to have subjects and topics that relate to many of the viewers. In other words, something that relates to their generational trends. For example, in the 1990’s the big hit television show, Friends, served as a comforting show for adults in their 20s as they navigated through life with hardships and other topics that viewers could relate to the characters on the show. These topics varied from personal to business as the storyline progressed, but in the process still served viewers with constant laughs.

If I were the commissioner of the FCC I would serve the public interest by more strictly regulating predatory advertisment.

Q3: Television serving the public interest is meant as programming and content that serves some kind of interest of the general public. What those interests are is highly subjective and debated. A well agreed upon example would be education. Shows like Sesame Street serve this interest by creating educational content for children.

Q 2: The FCC is the Federal Communications Commission, and it’s purpose is to regulate content and protect copyright. If I were the the FCC commissioner I would more heavily regulate advertising on T.V. programs rather than the show's actual content, as I believe capitalism is more harmful than profanity or nudity.

Q 3: From what I gathered from the lecture, when the FCC says they serve the public interest they really mean they serve the interest of the state. The content promoted is meant to teach the public the values needed for them to be good citizens. I think the Great British Bake Off is a good example of a show that does this, as it presents the unifying of people and a mollifying look at British history.

Q3: Usually when a show is said to "serve the public interest" this means it promotes ideas such as non-violent conflict resolution, being considerate of all sides of an issue, and embracing people's differences (one example I can think of is Sesame Street). Of course, this meaning of the phrase is one I have mostly heard from rich, white men in power. It makes sense people in power do not want television to promote violent conflict resolution to millions of working class people, as this would put them in danger. It also makes sense that while many shows serve the public interest by promoting the idea of unity despite differences in race, religion, etc., very few of these same shows ever actually discuss systemic bigotry, as this would make people in power look bad as well. You will also often hear how antithetical TV violence is to serving the public good, though these same people believe television has a responsibility to inform the public about worldly issues. When examined under a closer lens, it is hard to see a difference between this definition of "serving the public interest" and censorship and propaganda.

Q2: The FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission, and they regulate communication through radio, television, satellite, etc.

Jeffrey Hopson, Q2:The FCC are a commission that monitor things on the radio, tv, and other forms of public communication in the US. Their job is to regulate these things for the public viewing. What I would do to do a better job is focus on the quality side of TV rather than quantity. There are hundreds of new shows that come out on TV every year but very rarely do these shows get a renewed. There is a lack of creativity in our current society because creators are just recycling things that have been successful and are also view oriented so they will produce whatever they think will get views rather than what they would do if there wasn't. So I would implement something that would get rid of a view system so this would make writers and directors focus on the quality of a show

Q3:
What is meant by TV serving public interests is providing content and news to the public that wouldn't regularly know or hear about. Before people retained information through reading wether that was a newspaper or magazine etc. These are still done to this day but in much smaller numbers. Nowadays everybody is looking at a screen. Everywhere you go there are screens everywhere. The best way to educate and inform people is through these screens so wether thats the news or a tv show that are demonstrating real life situations there's many ways in which TV can help inform, educate, and even help people.
