The portfolio is a reflection about the experiences encountered during the time doing the course Caribbean Civilization FOUN 1101. It is based upon the facts and issues related to the Caribbean and its impact on Caribbean identity. This portfolio highlights four objectives which one, is based upon a TED TALK which is centered around European and African culture. Secondly the portfolio explains the concept of religion and understanding ones social and geographical environment, social environment- Arima, Santa Rosa Roman Catholic Church, geographical environment- Trinidad and Tobago. Also it highlights Haiti’s contemporary society and lastly a reflective piece which reveals deeper views of what the course has taught and how it relates tp personal life and experiences. These issues are still evident in present day Caribbean society and therefore they will be discussed in this portfolio.

Objective 1 TED TALK - “The Danger of a Single Story.”

In this clip, “The Danger of a Single Story,” the novelist Chimamanda Adichie was an author who based her novels around European culture. Her characters in her novels always had blue eyes, drank ginger beer and they ate apples. This author was a Nigerian author with a European mindset, as she was brain washed as a child to believe that the foreign culture was the ideal way and she also believe that the books she read had to have foreign characters or the book was of no quality. In the course FOUN 1101 the Europeans had come to the Caribbean and when they had arrived the islands were already inhabited by the Native people.

The Europeans always upheld the view that anything unlike their culture was inferior and they were the one who had the ideal culture, and so they did not accept the culture of the Native people nor the Africans. The mindset of the Nigerian novelist had soon changed when she had discover African literature. She became more appreciative of her roots/background and culture. She encountered several persons who had a single story about the African culture where they considered them to be poor persons who were prone to starvation. She became more open to other cultures when she learned to accept hers. In this course FOUN 1101 it was taught that no culture should be frowned upon because everyone has their own beliefs and value system and there is no such thing as an uncivilized culture. Being closed minded is like being mentally enslaved and not free to think. The clip seen below is linked to European and African culture and how the Europeans viewed African culture and why they were “erased” from history.

Religion has played an important role during the period of slavery. In the course FOUN 1101 it was noted that during the period of slavery there was a mix of different people that came into the Caribbean who brought their religion and cultures with them, which made the Caribbean a more diversified region. The Africans had their own religion and so did the Native people. The Europeans also brought their religion with them which is known as Christianity, which they used as an excuse to come into the Caribbean to promote slavery and it was forced upon the slaves. They taught the slaves about the Christian law and about their God. Their religion was Roman Catholic .When slavery was abolished Christianity was still upheld by the Caribbean people. They also brand off into other religions such as Spiritual Baptists which were traits of the Africans. Other religions were also introduced to the Caribbean during the indentureship period such as Hinduism which was the culture of the Indians. In the video shown below it can be seen that the people of Arima Borough came together as a community in order to uphold the rituals and practices of the Roman Catholic religion to make part in Sunday morning Mass.

Trinidad and Tobago is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and because of its geographical location and history its is identified as a Caribbean country. In the picture below it is evident that Trinidad and Tobago is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. The island was once apart of South America but later on was broken off. Trinidad and Tobago makes up part of the Lesser Antilles. The island is also found on the Caribbean Plate as seen in the image below. Therefore Trinidad and Tobago makes up a part of the Caribbean accordion to its geographical location. Because of Trinidad and Tobago’s neighboring countries it was able to uphold Christianity because of them bringing along this religion with them into the country.

Objective 3 Haiti’s Contemporary Society

Haiti had had slavery, revolution, debt, deforestation, corruption, exploitation and violence according to Alex Von Tunzelmann. In the 18th century Haiti was known as the Pearl of the Antilles, one of the richest islands in the France Empire. They were known to export 60 percent of all coffee and 40 percent of all sugar consumed in Europe. The French Revolution in 1789 raised tricky questions. France then became distracted by war with Britain and so the French commander was overthrown. Haiti then declared independence in 1804, but their independence led to the destruction of their country’s infrastructure and its plantation. Haiti was in debt to the American, French and the German banks after they took large loans and sent most of their years repaying it. Their culture then flourished again but after this came another revolution. They had a broken and corrupt government led by Baby Doc, who eventually fled and took millions along with leaving the country bankrupt. Haiti suffers more than its neighboring countries because of being pruned to disasters such as hurricanes. earthquakes and floods. Haiti today is down to Somalia according to Von Tunzelmann. It is referred to as unsustainably overcrowded and the country is in advanced stage of industrial collapse. Its is said that 80 percent of the population is on the poverty line. Therefore due to the mistakes of the past Haiti is now in a dilapidated condition.

Caribbean Civilisation FOUN 1101 is similar to the subjects Caribbean History and Caribbean Studies from my previous academic years in at the CSEC level and CAPE level. At first when I heard about the course my mind had already grown tired because to myself this was another experience of doing history which was every monotonous, but I had no choice so I approached the course with an opened mind. At the start of the course the assignments given were a bit on edge and frustrating because things seemed unclear but as time progressed, Caribbean Civilization dedicated tutors cleared up the mess.

In addition, this course facilitated online lectures and face to face and online tutorials which made it flexible for students who did the course. At first the online lectures were baffling in my thoughts because of the facet that there were many distractions at home, but when the course had finally started this was not the case because the topics were intriguing which captured my undivided attention at 6pm on Monday evenings, despite the few technical difficulties that were encountered at the beginning.

This course was the real deal as the topics such as Diversification and Caribbean Identity made me as an individual more appreciative of the culture that i am apart of and also appreciate the culture of other individuals. It was deeper than what was taught at the CSEC and CAPE level as there were insights of pre-literate and subjugated knowledge presented in the course, making it a lot more informative. Thus the Caribbean Civilization course was effective in portraying the depth and background of Caribbean life.

Thus, FOUN 1101 is an eyeopener course. It depicts a better understanding of Caribbean life and Identity. This course would be essential to all, especially persons shoreside in the Caribbean as they would now be able to put on their thinking caps before they judge some one else’s culture, because there is no such thing as an uncivilised culture and be appreciative of where they come from. What I took away from this course is that Our lives were our ancestors’ biggest dreams.
