The idea of home could be a person or feeling as well. I chose this song as a prime example of what victims and survivors of human trafficking experience through the feeling of guilt and being permanently damaged.

Within this subject, there are various types of trafficking. In Colombia, sex trafficking and forced labor are the primary forms. However, homeless exploitation and organ trafficking are also issues at large in Colombia. According to the Global Slavery Index, Colombia is the country third most affected by human trafficking in Latin America, behind Panama and Venezuela. In Colombian history, 18 arrests took place on the United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. A few days after, a worldwide leader in the fight against human trafficking initiated 833 human trafficking cases in 2017, resulting in 1602 arrests, 600 convictions, and identified 518 victims. Human Trafficking is a current and arising issue in Colombia, this essay will unveil and discover the harsh manner of human trafficking.

Human trafficking in Colombia takes advantage of vulnerable individuals seeking better opportunities. If a potential victim falls for the false promises, the trafficker then transports the person to another place or country for exploitation. Factors that cause vulnerability people include lack of economic opportunities, poverty, unemployment, domestic violence, and undocumented immigrants, commonly for forced labor trafficking. Venezuelans also make up many of those trafficked in Colombia. More than 2 million Venezuelans have left their country since 2015, fleeing economic collapse and political instability. The majority of these displaced Venezuelans have entered Colombia, and in their vulnerability, they are targets of human trafficking. My family lives in Cartagena, Colombia, after traveling to my home country since 2012, I’ve witnessed an increase of dialogue and awareness the people of Colombia have carried to the spiraling topic of human trafficking. The rise of information and cases spread through newspapers, social media, and films has let this issue become a hot topic among people, in hopes that conversation will prevent a large number of possible victims and ways to avoid becoming a target.

AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM

  • Carefully read any agreements that you are offered to sign and make two copies of all your documents, visas, and passports. Keep one copy with you.
  • If possible, memorize the addresses and phone numbers of organizations that can help you in the country of entry.
  • Let someone know who you are with, and where you are at all times. I use the app Life360 to check on my friend's locations after a late night out to make sure they get home safely.

Traffickers further control victims by remaining with them at all times, controlling their expenditures, transportation, handling visa renewals, and establishing operating rules. They also confiscate victims' identification documents to control their movement. Unfortunately, when it comes to children, traffickers often focus on building relationships to lure children into the trafficking industry. After establishing some sort of relationship, the traffickers then force and engage the child in many forms of abuse to keep the child trapped. This is a form of emotional manipulation that can undermine close relationships and leave victims feeling powerless, guilty, and frustrated. Part of being an adolescent is the physical, mental, and emotional changes that come with it. Just as pre teens explore body image, independence, privacy, and identity, young adults may dig relationships that might involve exploring sexual orientation too. Around this time, it is important to engage in relationships with people of similar ages to you. However, you may experience a close friend who is in a relationship with a partner who is much older. One of my close friends is in a relationship with a man who is 4 years older, and while the relationship seems to be doing well, It is important that I check in on her frequently and keep a close eye on both individuals behaviours.

Victims of human trafficking do not always run away because there are reasons for staying. For instance, some people may not feel like they are being victimized, and In some cases, they feel that being sexually exploited is normal because of childhood experiences and trauma. Traffickers also manipulate victims or survivors to believe they love them by building trust and feelings of protection, love and commitment resulting in the victims developing an emotional attachment to their trafficker. This can become a difficult situation to walk away from because they are incredibly skilled liars. In my experience, having a toxic manipulator in your life can be shown through behaviours like claiming the role of the victim and undermining your faith in your grasp of reality. When dealing with psychological manipulation it's key to look out for similar actions. In addition, threats against family members or friends being harmed can influence the victims to believe that enduring pain and remaining silent is the better option. Lastly, victims of trafficking do not run away as the trafficker requires their victims to repay all debt (real or not real) before they can be set free.
