All the newchildren may have been born on different days, but their given birthday, or Ceremony, is the Ones Ceremony, where they receive their families. A Ceremony celebrates a new year for each child (like a birthday!). And plus, each rank a child moves up is literally an age. For example, Lily is a Seven and will soon become an Eight, while Jonas is an Eleven and he will soon graduate to Twelves. An apple always seems perfect when you purchase it at first (people don't purchase bruised apples too often!). The apple looks shiny and untouched at first glance. On the inside, though, the apple could be rotting. Apples rot from the inside out, and that's what's happening to their utopia. Think about it; the whole Birthmother job and how it's seen as dishonor and shame. Their utopia is about sameness, right? Well, a Birthmother is a job that a female can't have. That's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to internal flaws that nobody realizes. Most things are eliminated to keep the utopia completely equal, and nobody is different. The dream that Jonas had makes him different, so the pill is used to stop "The Stirrings" and make him go back to normal, aka the exact same as everyone else. It is far fancier than any other house in the community. For example, the Receiver has hundreds more books than any other person in their Utopia, and all of the books are shelved floor to ceiling. Another thing would be the quality of the furniture. First, the new Receiver removes his or her tunic. Then, they lay down on the best stomach down. Next, the current Receiver who has the memories, places their hand on the new Receivers back, and finds the memory they're looking for, then they start to transmit the memory. The new Receiver then gets mentally transported into the memory and experiences it. None at all. He thinks it is just them, and they are the first. This is definitely not a good way to live because it leaves you clueless about many, many things and there is really no way to learn them. Its crucial to know the mistakes people have made in the past that messed things up because the people in the present don't know not to make that mistake, and they may make the same mistake. It would also be nice to know the things that others did in the past in order to get you and your peers where you are now. If we didn't know who George Washington was or what the Revolutionary War was, who would we give credit to for building our nation? It's pretty much like that. Privacy is not something that is given to people in Jonas' Utopia, I bet, and that is why he's surprised. The Receiver is highly respected, and the job is more secretive, so they're allowed to work in private and be isolated from the others, because that's what the job requires. Some terms were: Snow, sled, hill, downhill, sunshine, and sunburn. When he experienced snow, he was very excited. Same with the sunshine, he was relaxed while laying in the sun. Jonas is now the Receiver of Memory, who will be RECEIVING memory, and the old Receiver is now GIVING his memories to Jonas. It basically shows how Jonas is being given his new memories.
