Thanks to the K team for the awesome professional conversation and BIG thanks to Marge! Chris is working on the professional learning plan for next year, but a few theme/notes came out of our conversation that I wanted to recap and review.
Assessment:
  • Importance of looking at multiple data points/assessments for students (phonics, phonological awareness, developmental spelling, running records, sight words etc.)-not just text level
  • Using data to carefully plan for instruction and knowing well what students have control over in developing plans
  • Marge had a nice organizer on her plan sheets for taking quick running records on the group. We didn't get to that in our discussion, but I liked how it was embedded in her plans
Instruction:
  • Using the instructional reading level for instruction and the independent level for independent reading-the importance of the text being in the "right zone" for students (opportunities for problem solve, but not too much challenge)
  • Being strategic about when you want students to do the problem solving and when you just tell them the word and move on
  • The more analysis students do of a word the more likely it is to become a sight word and stored in memory
  • Round Robin is not recommended as a regular routine, but having some oral reading with a purpose can make sense in K
  • Teaching phonics rules, but also teaching for flexibility (e.g. bush)
  • May start with providing phonogram to student (/at/) when student is struggling with blending phonemes
  • NEW Phonics Assessment-expectation is 10-20 @ the end of T3 for K. Make sure to record substitutions and attempts (e.g., /p/a̅/t/)-not all errors are equal
Other:
  • No more than 4 in a group-best practice would be the more need the smaller the group
  • Ideally meet with students 4-5 times a week for students not proficient
  • Would opt for shorter and more frequently in K rather than longer and less frequently for struggling students
  • Reversals are developmentally appropriate until end of grade 1
  • When things are not ideal (e.g., class size, time allotted) think, "what is the best I can do?"
