He struggled in school because he is dyslexic. His artist uncles encouraged him to become an artist in third grade. In sixth grade he began studying under Clarence Wood at the Saturday Morning Art League. He later went to Temple University where he discovered his preference for watercolor art. Today E.B. Fire on the Mountain is a retelling of a folktale about an Ethiopian boy, Alemayu, a young shepherd, who is challenged by his master, the rich man, to spend the night on the mountains with just a thin covering. If he survives he would receive 4 cows and money, but if he fails he must leave with his sister and never return.
