Does the Polluted Air Affect our Brains?

In the article, "Air Pollution May Shrink the Brain, Study Suggests," by Agata Blaszczak-Boxe (2015), the author studied the impact of air pollutions and emissions from factories and vehicles on human's brain relying on an environmental study presented by Elissa H. Wilker, an epidemiology researcher. Wilker claims whoever lived near to polluted area is vulnerable to a decline in their brain volume and to be infected by silent strokes which is linked to many brains' diseases. Despite the fact that aging reduces brain volume, a small increase of fine-particle pollution is responsible for reducing brain volume about one year, according to Wilker's study. On the flip side, what the study claimed was based on one survey only, which was conducted on the older adults for the first time, and that is not enough to proof the idea of this study as per Wilker ; however. Also, she indicates the inflammation, which caused by air pollution, is responsible for the change in brain volume. The last outcome was not proven as well, yet it could help to figure out the relation between pollution and brains' diseases. To conclude, the relation between our brains' diseases and polluted air has not proven yet, and studies are ongoing to find the relationship between them.

References

Blaszczak-Boxe, A.

In "Air Pollution May Shrink the Brain, Study Suggests," Agata Blaszczak-Boxe writes about a new study, which outlines changes of a brain structure because of increasing level of air pollution. She refers to research of Elissa H. Wilker, who linked an increase in fine-particle pollution to smaller brain size in seniors. Also she pointed out to a connection between smaller brain volume and risk of so called “silent stokes”. At the same time, there are no enough evidences to prove that point.

Reference

Blaszczak-Boxe A. (2015, April). Air Pollution May Shrink the Brain, Study Suggests.

As Agata Blaszcazak-Boxe(2015) explains in" Air Pollution May Shrink the Brain, Study Suggests," a polluted air we breath has led to a brain volume reduction. According to ELissa H. Wilker, a cardiovascular epidemiology resaecher, the older you get, the more your brain becomes small due to the loss of neurons.A connection between an increase of fine-part particle pollution and a risk of having memory loss was claimed by Wilked. Her study tried to find out at this sexagenarian population the connection between air pollution, brain change and the risk of silent strokes. She mentioned another factor, inflammation, which could result to the air pollution and then led to the brain change. To conclude, Wilker invites new researchers to prove the relationship between some brain diseases and air polluted because her study was not exhaustive.

Referennce:

Blaszczak-Boxe, A.
