The people of an oppressed country always find themselves with lack of a sense of belonging to their own country and community. Language is also a form of rebel and defiance against the foreign invaders, but since at that time the people of Alsace didn't know their native language hence it was much easier for the Germans to impose their language and capture the territory. But we must not forget the fact that Franz till this date identifies himself as a Frenchman which clearly shows that he isn't a traitor of his land and is loyal to the culture and traditions of France.
