Why do we need monuments to fabulous heroes?

Fairytale sculptures, monuments are significant for people as a symbol of goodness, happiness, all positive human experiences, teach us to be faithful and kind, noble and courageous. Promotes cultural diversity and the preservation of the unique identity of society.

1. Origin and Distribution: Giants( in the Georgian language ,,Devebi" )are one of the most common and important characters in Georgian folktales. They appear in stories throughout Georgia, especially in tales from mountainous regions.

2. Appearance: Giants(devebi) are often described as enormous, powerful beings. They may have multiple heads (often three, five, or nine). In some tales, they have a single eye on their forehead.

3. Character and Behavior: Devebi are primarily negative characters. They are often aggressive and evil, but can also be foolish. Sometimes they kidnap humans, especially young women.

4. Dwelling: Devebi often live in mountains, caves, or fortresses. Their dwellings are frequently described as rich and full of treasure.

5. Role in Tales: Giants (devebi) are often the main antagonists in stories. The hero must defeat the giant or giants to save a village, rescue a captive, or obtain treasure.

6. Defeat: Despite their strength, devebi are often defeated by human heroes through cleverness and intelligence. Sometimes heroes are aided by magical objects or animals.

7. Symbolic Meaning: Devebi often symbolically represent forces of nature or obstacles that humans face.

8. Famous Tales: Devebi appear in well-known Georgian tales such as "Natsarkekia," "Aspurtsela," "Tsikara," and others.

Giants play a significant role in Georgian folklore and well represent the rich imaginative world of Georgian culture.

Myths, fairy tales, legends, traditions of our people and of different peoples from every corner of the earth, meet and wait to be heard, to be shared, to be spread.

"The House of Fairy Tales" a "museum in a different way", aims to promote the intangible world cultural heritage and monuments of the word.

Thematic artistic exhibits become the occasion and inspiration for traveling narratives in a space that exhibits, explores, documents, educates, engages with the community and interacts. Storytelling and music, family intercultural workshops and educational seminars, educational programs for young and old alike, coexist and complement each other with the fairy tale as their axis.

"The House of Fairy Tales" is located in Athens in the area of Ag. Dimitrios, has 200 square meters of space including activity and exhibition rooms as well as a thematic library-reading room with the possibility of using new technologies. It has been in operation since September 2014.

In Trikala, Greece, there is a village where every Christmas the fairy tales come to life. In this Christmas park, visitors can enjoy Christmas plays and see beloved fairy tale heroes come to life.

The theme of this year's event is one of the best known and most widely read books in all languages, "The Little Prince on the Planet of Christmas".Thus, the stalls, cribs and events of the Elves' Mill will be based on the hero of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his journeys to the planets of the universe.

"Once upon a time on a small planet in a vast galaxy there lived a little Prince among roses and volcanoes. As Christmas approached, the little prince began to dream of a different world. So he decided to travel to other planets and seek the truth. He visited 5 planets, each of which had only one inhabitant, the majestic King, a beautiful and fragrant Rose, the faithful Phanafat and the elegant Astronomer. The last planet to be visited was Earth, and he found himself in the Elves' Mill," says the "script" of this year's event.

Apart from the houses and toys dedicated to the Little Prince, the enchanting and colourful setting is completed by the fairytale and chocolate factory, the wishing well and Santa's woodcarving workshop. Also on the premises of the Mill are a fun park, an ice rink, a Christmas market and street food stalls. Over the 45 days of the celebration there are many events planned, ranging from magic shows and story readings to musical performances, concerts and physical play.

The monuments of the heroes of the myths are elements of the culture and history of each place. They activate us to learn and appreciate the values for which the heroes of the monuments spoke and performed remarkable actions.

Făt-Frumos, Beautiful-Son

Ask any Romanian 🙂 and Făt-Frumos, Beautiful Son, is the one Romanian folktale hero that’s on everyone’s lips. Well, he is a character quite hard to forget, handsome (as if it needed be said), smart, possessing great physical and spiritual strength, performing good deeds left and right, always keeping his word while going through some really queer adventures.

Usually the youngest son of a king, Beautiful Son always succeeds where his older brothers failed. I guess he is a bit like Superman or Spiderman – the underdog who eventually goes through tests and obstacles that surpass ordinary men’s power, fighting monsters – dragons – and other malicious characters – hags, witches, or even prejudiced, unreasonable kings, always emerging victorious.

He does have an aid, and this is one of my favorite parts as it is a magic horse, a Marvelous Horse, a Magic Horse, who looks old and shabby, but is given a second chance.

I am not sure I am cut to be the type of hero Beautiful Son is, having to overcome Frost’s dilemma as to which road to travel: “If you turn right, you will be in sorrow; if you turn left, you will be in sorrow as well“, and ending up traveling through deserts and snowy places on this land, but on the other land too.

Isn’t this what we love about heroes, the second chance they are offered and they offer to others?

My Top Heroes from Romanian Folktales

For a child, a hero is the ticket to an adventure he / she can take from the safety of their own bed. But if we look at folk heroes closely, as adults, we can see that they encompass the history of the nation who birthed them. Romania has known centuries of harsh attacks from north, south, east and west (mongols, Turks, Austro-Hungarians, Russians, Nazis) – and Romanians always fought back, always forced to decide between two equally unfortunate choices: ally with your enemies or fight them.

Peisajele din complex dar și din afara acestuia sunt mirifice. Aleile desenate și așezate în trepte, pe sub portaluri ori tuneluri de vegetație, te poartă de la o lume la alta, de la una de poveste la alta modernă.

În incinta complexului poți desfășura multe activități, unele mai solicitante, precum echitație, tir cu arcul, traseu cu ghicitori, dar și recreative: piese de teatru pentru copii, modelarea lutului, desene cu nisip, dans cu personajele mult indrsgite de către copii! Și dacă nu doriți să luați parte la activități, vă puteți relaxa la piscină exterioară sau acoperită, în funcție de anotimp.

The Column of Infinity or the Endless Column is a sculpture by the Romanian artist Constantin Brâncusi, part of the trilogy of the Monumental Ensemble from Târgu Jiu, composed of the Infinite Column, the Gate of the Kiss and the Table of Silence designed and executed by him.
