A disempowering experience I've had through grade school was getting teachers who clearly didn't care enough to help instill good study habits within students. People go through things that cause them to perform less than adequately during their school tenure, and some teachers refuse to acknowledge this.

A disempowering experience i've had was my sophomore year in high school where my English teacher really only cared about grades, rather than actually trying to teach her students. I remember a time where we were taking a test and an amber alert went off. A couple students including myself had are phones go off and she docked off hella points from us. At the time it really felt like she didn't really care at all. Plus she would favor the students that were "perfect" through her eyes.

Understanding the Myth of the Average was very helpful for me in the last few years of my high school experience. Before that, I got low grades because I wouldn't learn/take notes/agree with the way teachers wanted me to and I was punished for that through low grades. The reading was validating when addressing why our current grading system is problematic.

in 7th grade I had my first disempowering moment - my math teacher would purposely disregard me because I was a "dumb Mexican" all because the way she explained the math was complicated to me (and other fellow Mexican peers). I was then put into math support where I felt more seen and heard.
