TEACHING PHILOSOPHY 

Our teaching techniques are based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). We use a “best practice” approach to intervention in which the most current scientifically-supported ABA methods are implemented. Some of the teaching techniques routinely utilized in our program include discrete-trial teaching (DTT), natural environment teaching (NET), errorless teaching, shaping, and differential reinforcement. 

Our efforts are aimed at individually tailoring each intervention program to address a child’s specific needs. We teach with an emphasis on maximizing every learner’s independence and producing meaningful outcomes that generalize to a variety of family members and settings. We partner with parents in the design and implementation of each child’s treatment plan. Our focus on parent training ensures that children have maximum opportunities to practice and refine emerging skills.

Peer 1 on 1’s purpose is to create a more autistic friendly environment for future generations by improving the social and communication skills of autistic children while increasing autism awareness for non-autistic teens. Many autistic people have limited contact with their peers . Peer 1 on 1 plans to create opportunities for autistic children to practice social interactions with teenage volunteers through activities and programs. These events will be able to expose autistic children to scenarios close to the daily life of a neuro-typical (NT) developed teen. These activities will also help improve the quality of life autistic children can lead in their futures. Peer 1 on 1 also seeks to increase autism awareness, especially with young children and teens, so that we can help and erase any negative stigma of autism early and to help non-autistic teens learn how to treat autistic people from an early age.  

 

Center (FEC) whose mission is to educate and empower people with disabilities and their  

families. As a PTI and FEC, we are part of a national and state network of agencies that receive  

federal and state funding to provide similar services. Our primary clientele are parents and  

families of children from birth to age 26, although we serve all ages. TASK helps children with  

disabilities, their families and the professionals who serve them navigate special education,  

disability services and assistive technology through workshops, technology labs, phone and in- 

office consultations, and referrals to community resources.

Our Adaptive Recreation program is dedicated to providing quality resources to participants and family members who are looking for activities and organizations available in the City of Whittier. This program and activities are designed for those ages 15 years and older, unless otherwise noted. While programs remain hosted virtually, all ages are welcome to join!
