During the On Country visit, I went to Knox Forest near my home. I stopped under the tall trees. I felt the wind brushing my skin, and I heard birds singing and trees rustling in the wind. I moved my arms slowly, like wings, and imagined myself as a bird flying in the forest. I can smell the fresh grass and felt the sun on my face, I felt peaceful and calm. This experience made me feel free and connected to the world. I remembered my childhood, my brother and I always climbed trees and played pretend games, thinking we were a bird and an aeroplane. These memories reminded me that children often express their feelings through movement, sound, and drama. In my creative response, I used all three languages. First is sound, bird songs, and nature's sounds inspired my own singing. Second is movement, I danced like a bird flying in the trees. Third is drama, I pretend to be a bird and use my imagination, body, and voice to tell the story. In my video, I pretended to be a bird. this experience reminded me of Wilson,(2018)"Such factors in children’s environments often include opportunities for seclusion (as in “secret” dens or other nest-like refuges), exploration, and manipulation. Complexity, diversity, opportunities for immersion or direct encounters with the natural world, and opportunities for experiencing “magical moments” can also contribute to a “sense of place” experience." childeen need to develop a sense of place. This also connects to Edwards er al. (2011)"The theory of the hundred languages, as proposed by Reggio Emilia educators, offers a new vantage point for seeing children in their brilliance and competence in constructing and advancing their own understanding." From the two readings, I understand that children don't need to sit down in school to learn. They can learn in many ways by doing, thinking, feeling, and imagining. In my future practice, I will give children more freedom. I will take them outside to explore nature, listen to the world, dance, sing, and enjoy playtime in nature. I believe children belong to the world and to nature.
